WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. -- Richard Jeni, a standup comedian who played to sold-out crowds, was a regular on the "Tonight Show" and appeared in movies, died of a gunshot wound in an apparent suicide, police said Sunday.

Police found the 45-year-old comedian alive but gravely injured in a West Hollywood home when they responded to a call Saturday morning from Jeni's girlfriend, Los Angeles Police Officer Norma Eisenman said.

Eisenman said the caller told police: "My boyfriend shot himself in the face."

Jeni died at a nearby hospital.......................

you think I'm kidding. Jeni had some...less than reputable connections. Maybe he killed himself, maybe he didn't. Usually suicides don't shoot themselves in the face. R.I.P. to a fine entertainer.

Richard Jeni was my favorite stand-up comedian since Bill Hicks. Now they are both dead. If Jeni had died of an accident or natural causes like Bill Hicks I could accept this a lot easier. What a waste of life and talent. I hope he is at peace now. Thank you for the many laughs Richard Jeni.

That is so weird. I just sent his stand-up DVD back to Netflix. Someone told me I had to watch it because it was funny. It was pretty good. But Eddie Izzard and Steven Wright will always be my favorites.

It's a shame.
