Could [former GM] Jeff Ireland be a good GM [a 2nd time]? (1 Viewer)

That would depend on the coach. Its good to see all these replace loomis threads. This has been mounting and finally its getting momentum here. I am not sure gayle user name but if you read this, it has to start time. It has end right now. You gotta take the back

He was at one point. Oversaw some very mid Dolphin teams.

Apparently, the rest of the NFL doesn't think so, otherwise he would have been one by now. I don't think he's even had too many interviews. So, No. I don't think he's that good of a personnel guy, either. The drafts have been sucking for a while now.

I think Ireland is a really good personnel guy. When it comes to personnel there's three arms to consider:
1. The NFL draft
2. Free Agency
3. Roster management

Watching this game, I don't think the Saints actually have a drafting problem. No team hits on every pick. Heck no team hits on half their picks. The Saints probably do as well as the best drafting teams. I think they're at least in the top third of teams. Yes, they have had some first round misses recently. From what has been said about the Saints, the coach's input is big part of the early picks and the scouting team handles the later picks. This is where Ireland's influence helps. So going through the 3 personnel arms, I think the Saints biggest issue is #3, then #2, but mostly #3. The roster has been poorly managed for several years. That's not on Ireland.

The Saints made a pointed decision to go with the potential of Davenport instead of signing Trey Hendrickson. This wasn't a cap issue. The Saints could have figured out to make it work and indeed would have made it work if it had been Davenport who flashed. They weighed potential against performance and decided Hendrickson's performance didn't outweigh what Davenport could be one day. They picked incorrectly. This has been a reoccurring issue for the Saints in one shape or form. Whether it's the well discussed examples of Gardner Johnson and Baun, or the lesser examples of Onyemata and Kaden Ellis, the Saints have made questionable choices in hindsight. The recent "retooling" of the defensive line where players allowed to walk have outplayed those brought in is a perfect example.

I think having Ireland will be an impact full part of the rebuild. The Saints just need the right coach to manage the roster.

Hire him as a GM and also hire dez bryant just to stop him from asking potential draft picks what their mothers do for a living during the pre-draft interview.

Nope, Nope, Nope. We need fresh blood instead of all these in-house retreads.

Yes Ireland i have zero faith in. I have hope with Loomis at least.
You're on your own without one. The only faith I have in Mick is that he will remain egotistical and delusional about the team's current state.

Hire Alec Halaby and have Kellen Moore come with him.
To be successful you need to poach the top and key performers from other teams.

The Eagles have been relevant for so long and it's time to strip them of their personnel.

That sounds like what a rational organization would do. Unfortunately, we prefer to try to rehabilitate losers in the FO and coaching staff. I'm not sure if Moore will work out as a coach, but I wish we had a competent GM running this process instead of three blind mice.
