Derek Carr posts Rolls Royce review video while absent during Saints offseason workouts ; Carr has no sling on, repeatedly moves shoulder (1 Viewer)

So in all these threads I keep seeing posters say “he’s the best qb on the roster” and I get why they see it but I have to disagree, and I’ve felt that since basically the start of last season.

Here is why I disagree:

To be the best QB on a roster, it is about being the best fit, it’s not all arm talent, there is the Character, Leadership, Locker room chemistry, and a whole other wack of intangibles.

Together, when combined, create a scenario of a player being the best QB for that roster.

Carr has come in here and has failed in just about every category, be it him being a complete jerk to his teammates or his selfish me first attitude when it comes to everything else.

I simply cannot see him as the best QB on our roster because I don’t think he genuinely cares to be a great QB, Teammate or Face of a franchise. It’s just simply all about him!

So while people sit here and get upset about winning 5 games if Rattler starts, I have to sit here to thinning to myself, how many winning teams did Derek Carr ever beat? With an actual full roster? You see Rattler shows up, he’s IN TO trying to be the guy, he is there already getting to work. If you ask me the floor is 5 wins with him and the ceiling is much higher, that is, with a healthy group around him.

The last thing I’ll say is this, it’s not always all about what a QB can do, but it’s what he won’t do that shapes his value to a certain extent. If you don’t want to grow, if you don’t want to do certain things, then be prepared for the results that come with it. We see it with Carr.

Let’s all take a collective deep breath and just admit that this guy needs to get the hell out of here

Because cutting Carr this year without restructuring his contract would have made it really difficult and required bad moves to get under the cap, including pushing money for old players into future years, and even with that they would have barely had enough money to sign their draft class and zero money to add anything in free agency. And, to get rid of him after the restructure means the team will be paying him $40 million to sit at home or play for another team.

So, there really were no good options for letting Carr go this year because of his contract. If we are now forced to cut him post June 1 this year, instead of post June 1 next year, it's going to mean that his dead money is all going to come due on next years' cap instead of splitting it between 2026 and 2027.

There is more to consider than whether you really want him as your QB or not. His contract made it difficult and bad to cut him this year.
No no I agree, I understood that, but I do t think he ever should have been talked about or considered to be our starting QB after last season money or not, and if he wanted out we should have found a way.

I agree. But, I don't know what Carr was willing to do to help us release or trade him. If he wasn't willing to do enough to make letting him go not destroy our cap then there wasn't a good option.

End of day we are stuck with all of this and that’s fine but I mean to me it makes the most sense after this draft to be very clear that Carr isn’t going to be apart of this team. I get draft strategies now but once it’s said and done we need to draw a hard line in my opinion, we already gotta bite the Bullet on the money but I would bet dollars to donuts that the locker room doesn’t want that guy anywhere near them.

Agreed, and all the more reason that imo the cap DOES matter and the team needs to find another way moving forward, rather than this can kicking method.

I know it won’t happen, and I know many here say the cap doesn’t matter, or rather the way we handle it, but I think it matters very much.
This is something that’s not really being discussed enough. Sure it’s great that we get under the cap every year and for a couple of weeks we talk about Loomis as a cap guru, but all the maneuvering doesn’t matter if the contracts you’re playing with belong to players that A. Don’t have it anymore or B. Don’t want to be here.

There are so many guys on the payroll that might as well be dead money at this point. Ram was an example, Cam Jordan is an example, Honey Badger is an example, now Carr. I don’t know what they’re going to do with Taysom, but we’re going to eat his salary and he will pretty much be a zero this year based off the injury. The only way that a strategy of restructuring old players to get under the cap every year works is if those old players can still start, and if they can’t start, you have a bunch of good young players you’ve drafted to reload with. We haven’t drafted well for years. There’s no amount of cap maneuvering that can save you from bad contracts and bad draft picks.

I’m done with Carr. But from a medical prospective, let’s take a step back for a moment. Someone a chronic AC joint sprain isn’t often affected by lifting up their arm. They often can lift their arm overhead without difficulty. They experience symptoms when reaching their arm across their body, which can happen with throwing, or when being tackled and that shoulder leads to the ground.

I agree. It's just hard to know what position Carr is going to take in all this. Will he ramp up the pressure to be let go? I really want to cut him and get him off the team, but at the same point, cap wise, it makes the most sense to cut him after June 1 next year.

Maybe there are still things that can be done by Carr to help the cap hit like giving back guaranteed money, but I'm not sure he's willing to do that. If not, maybe the best things to do is just keep him away from the team, but I'm not sure the team can do that if he wants to show up and make things messy.

It's just a total sheet show at this point with no good options unless Carr will do what is necessary to make a clean break. And, honestly, I'm not even sure if him giving back guaranteed money works to help our cap even if he were willing to do it.

Thanks for the insight. I have always suspected that he probably did have a chronic problem with the AC joint that he was playing through and now he's decided he can't play through it because he wants out. And if that's the case, I'd imagine it would be exceedingly difficult fo the Saints to prove he's not really hurt since there will be evidence of an injury. It would be tough to prove he's lying because I suspect these sorts of injuries go relatively asymptomatic for some period of time and then come back and it's just a matter of being willing to play with the pain. And there is no objective way to say he's not in pain from an injury that more or less isn't fully healed.
