Saints fans start obsessing about the first round pick in the upcoming draft before the season even ends. Four long months later, we make that pick and then there are all of these great prospects available all the way to the middle of the third round that we only spend 24 hours obsessing about. To quote Frank Costanza, “Something’s missing.”

Well not sure what type of fan you are but I am always gonna look at ways to improve this team and share my thoughts... and when we can't even win our division let along make the playoffs... that 1st rd pick if used correctly could help Jumpstart this team back into the playoffs... so as soon as we realize this team is not a playoff team, gonne start looking at ways to improve....

I think the first round pick is always the headliner. That’s the best player you draft (or supposed to be), so it’s only natural that it’s going to get the most attention.

It’s also far easier to project just the first round, so that’s another reason why most of the discussion is on that.

Once you get into the weeds of day 2 and 3, it’s almost impossible to nail down a short list of players your team may want.

Similar to a lot of coaches, that’s the part of the draft where you just trust your scouts (or in fans’ case, your team), to make the right picks, because it’s going to be a lot of off the wall, unknown guys selected that are next to impossible to pinpoint or know much about unless it’s your full-time job to know these things.

I think I enjoy draft season more than the actual season, at least for the last few years.
When has a Saints first round pick

But, when has a Saints first round pick “jumpstarted” a Saints regime that doesn’t already have its stuff together. If you have a regime that has its stuff together (like Payton’s), maybe half of the first round picks are significant contributors over the long term. If a regime is a mess, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a first round pick “jumpstart” it. I think that’s part of the impetus behind this thread.

Yeah, happens to every team. And once in a blue moon you get a Mahomes or Reggie Bush. But more than likely, somebody got somebody better than you.
Mahomes and Bush don’t belong in the same sentence. One is the best player of his era. One was a good receiving back out of the backfield and punt returner after a legendary college career.

You regret drafting Bush? I think he was a great pick. That’s my only point. I struggled coming up with a first round no-brainer for the Saints.

The draft is one of my favorite things about the NFL. I personally really enjoy college football, and to see these kids all get drafted to their dream, and how the draft will play out is all very exciting. You have great players, but also simply good players, and yet a good player can out perform a great player depending on the teams they go to. Sometimes selections indicate the future path of an NFL team. There's so much occuring here rather then "NFL Teams just getting new young talent".

Throw in this is the first time I've had any faith in the Saints coaching staff since Payton left, AND we hold pick #9, AND we have question marks at QB now.

What's not to be excited about?

I just want the team to value those mid-round picks and not trade them away.

Funny how the answer to this question is Reggie Bush...

Our organization was a mess before we drafted him and while he was a solid player not a HoF level player the moment of drafting Reggie was without question deeply significant to the rebuilding of New Orleans.

I think there is also a reasonable argument to made for the drafting of Jim Dombrowski in 1986 as a significant turn in our culture.
