N/S For those That Wanted Brian Flores to be the Next Saints HC (1 Viewer)

Leadership is a difficult position. But one of the things good leaders need is accountability. Sometimes "prima donna" athletes only want to be praised. I get his point because there simply MUST be some positive reinforcement but some folks are motivated by criticism while others wilt under it. A good leader will know how much of criticism to praise he/she should be doing and which of his followers need more of one or the other.

And I'll add that most good leaders aren't born that way. For most, it takes some trial and error. Maybe Flores has learned from the mistakes he made in Miami? It's certainly what we were counting on with DA and the Raiders job. Maybe Flores would have struggled too, but I don't think you can assume he would not have realized that he handled Tua wrong and needed to be more careful about that with certain players in the future.

And I'll add the power of positive thinking approach that McDaniel uses is great, but it can begin to fall on deaf ears if the team isn't winning.

I was going to say something somewhat along those lines as well. I think of Bill Belichek in Cleveland and Andy Reid in Philly, then the same in New England and KC. We don't really know if Flores would have been successful here moreso than in Miami. Maybe he learned from some trial and error... or maybe he didn't.

And I am saying this literally having no dog in this fight.

Undermining a person’s confidence persistently and consistently in a job that requires instant decision confidence and little second guessing approaches sadistic bullying than beneficial coaching. Persistent and consistent behavioral correction with respect and measured critiquing gets better results. Is a carrot better than a stick?

Wasn't Belichick always super harsh on Tom Brady? Different players react to different coaching styles and all that but this sounded like it was personal. Like Flores didn't want Tua so he was just dogging him out nonstop. Not a great look.

Some coaches aren't doing it for motivation. Some coaches are just jerks who get off on humiliating certain players. I don't know if that was the case here but anyone who had to play for a jerk like that knows exactly what I'm talking about.

Do you still feel that way after hearing this?

Never take one side of the story.
Never judge a man on what another says without first hearing his side. Did you already have preconceived negative thoughts about B Flores? If so what made you feel that way about him? Because of what others said?
