He was released, every team with after him. The panthers didn’t want to complete so they asked the pats to pick him back up to trade him. It’s been done before. Until it’s officially on the NFL wire you still can.

Now, either the first three weeks was fool's good that delusioned them into thinking they are better than they are or they will still be able to take advantage of the rest of their weak schedule they have and make that push to be a playoff team.

He wasn't released. The Patriots let everyone know they were releasing him at 1600 Eastern to see if they could trade him first. There was another thread titled Patriots releasing Gilmore, but when it got merged with this one, the Patriots released Gilmore is the title that was kept.

That is right he was on the PUP with a quad injury, and you can't be released.
