It's time for me to man up and admit that the thread I started about the Saints passing the ball with first and goal... was a bit knee jerk. I thought about deleting the thread, but there was too much good discussion on both sides of the argument.

The main point I want to say is the obvious: CSP is a future HOF coach, and he certainly doesn't need me or anyone else to second-guess him when the bullets are flying. The game plan called on both sides of the ball was a masterpiece.

The team was well coached in all phases of the game, and I'm going to content myself with being a fan... not a back seat QB. 'Nuff sed.

I don’t think you need to apologize. Of Brady leads them to the win, then passing on 1st goal would be the main topic all week

And if Brady with 1:05 left and no timeouts also lead the Bucs down the field for the win after we tried three running plays in a row and not trying to score a TD in that position... there would also be tons of second guessing and gripping from the fan base.

There is no situation where the coach was going to make a set of calls that are immune from criticism if the worst happens. You either accept his rationale or you don't... there isn't any binary right or wrong here.

The point is, CSP had a game plan and was consistent with it all day, and the net result is one of the more impressive victories of his career. If you were knee-jerking a pissy reaction because you think he made a bad call in the moment, and later accepted it as part of the overall plan that you laud... then a little crow is a classy meal to order.

Or if the guy who just got forced into action had thrown a pick.

You were not alone, I was thinking run, run, pass, TD/FG. But, I think I stated somewhere else, I'm not a coach, I just play one on forums.

CSP has had some real dumb playcalls.

That said, I believe the stats back Payton up on this one. People are only questioning this because the Saints didn't get in the endzone. Had they scored a TD, Payton would be worshipped for having such massive balls. A touchdown has a dramatically higher chance of winning the game than a field goal, regardless of how much extra time brady would have had.

No need to apologize, leaving that much time on the clock with Brady is a gamble.
You're leaving time on the clock either way. Tampa had 2 timeouts.

And 2 other teams fumbled the ball away running the ball with leads yesterday. One won and one lost.

Hindsight is 20/20. I liked it when he went for it on 4th down, and I was ok with him passing late. I understood why he was doing it even when conventional wisdom dictated otherwise. And fwiw, conventional wisdom isn't who Coach Payton is, and I'd rather he stay aggressive. But that's just me.
