I know it is definitely way early to be talking about the off-season but I just wanted to throw this out there.

I find free agency one of the most exciting times in the NFL so I was recently looking ahead to see what players were going to be free agents this year.

I think many Saints fans will agree wide receiver is one of the bigger needs this off-season and lucky for the Saints, this is one of the best free agent wide receiver years ever. Sammy Watkins, Devante Adams, Paul Richardson, Danny Amendola, etc.

However, my favorite is Dolphins wide receiver Jarvis Landry. As I'm sure everyone knows, the Saints have struggled on third downs. I attribute this to the lack of a reliable, over-the-middle receiver that you can always count on to move the sticks. Willie Snead was that for us these last couple years but for whatever reason he has struggled this year. Landry is exactly what the Saints need on third downs.

I also know the Saints do have interest in Landry as there was talk of them trading for him.

I do agree we also need a receiver to stretch the field after Ginn leaves after next season, but I would prefer we draft a young player in the later rounds (like D.J. Chark) to learn from Ginn.

I know some people, including myself, think Linebacker, Tight End, Defensive End and Quarterback are bigger needs, but I think this is a still a big need we need to address.

Let me know your thoughts

P.S. Also this would finally give us an LSU player.

If we can get him for the right price, then we should make a run for him. The only thing I question is how much is he going to cost vs how much are the Saints looking to pay?

For the last few years this was something to look forward to but with a playoff spot to be had that is all i'm thinking about right now. But to address the topic I don't think the Saints will have Landry too high on their radar especially if his price is too high. To me finding a capable pass catching tight end is a bigger priority.

He's arguably the best slot receiver in football and a good return man as well.

I hope we target him or figure out the Snead situation and retain him for a really cheap price.

Landry would be great but it all comes down to $. I don't think the Saints can devote big dollars to the slot receiver position. That's a spot they've typically gotten guys in on the cheap. Hopefully, Landry will be willing to take a reasonable contract and come home!

I want him for a hometown discount. It’s either us or the giants, since OBJ is campaigning for him. I say we make a push

How great would it be to match Brees' accuracy with Landry's inability to not catch a ball? Plus, Jarvis and Mike will push each other to produce more. Brees with two guys of that caliber while handing off to Ingram/Kamara would be ridiculous.

However, this is his first veteran contract, so there will be no hometown discount. The Saints had their shot and then drafted Stanley Jean-Baptiste instead. The Saints will find a very good compliment to Mike in the draft. There are several great options.

He’s going to break the bank.

Contracts aren’t about what they’re worth, it’s about who has enough money to overspend.

He's not going to sign here for $3-4M/yr less than what he'd get elsewhere because that's going to be the difference in what we can offer and other teams. Now, he may decide to sign a 2-yr contract that is maybe $2.5-3M/yr less IF he thinks he has a better shot here than elsewhere at getting a SB ring, while still allowing him to increase his stats to sign an even bigger contract in the future as the salary cap continues to increase.

I say he's going to want at least $8M/yr b/c that's what Stills got and Landry is a better player (IMHO), but closer to $10-11M/yr. If we can get him between $6-7M/yr (essentially replacing Fleener's contract for his), then I think it's possible.

Otherwise, I say we target Moncrief since he's an Ole Miss alum and can still be a target across the middle. His production has dropped given the QB situation up there which helps our case and since he was drafted almost 30 slots behind Landry, you could argue he doesn't quite have the pedigree (as EJW likes to point out) that some of the other WR FA's have. Other WR FA's I like are Hurns or Lee from Jacksonville.
