Kris Richard Linking Back Up With Ryan Nielsen (1 Viewer)

Enjoying a thread before it turns into 'how Allen did it all wrong' - a rare treat.

Yeah that’s going to be a deadly combo I don’t think Jags fans realize what they have.

Speaking of defense the Saints defensive ranking under DA slid to 13 while Nielsen brought the Falcons ranking up to 11 a year before they was dead last in defense. Keep in mind the Falcons have less talented players on their defense compared to the Saints.

I told people on this forum it was Nielsen and not DA that was keeping our defense in the top 5 most people didn’t believe me look at what he did for the Falcons defense that was dead last a year before he got there.

Run defense still ranked in the early 20s in 2023 like it was when Nielsen was here in 2022. Pass defense dropping from 2nd to 10th seem to have more to do with older LB and safeties in coverage, and a boundary CB being played out of position at slot and repeatedly giving up plays. Plus Latt missing almost half a season again.

Nielsen also brought 12 of our 2022 sacks (Onyemata and Elliss) with him to Atlanta. Cam Jordan’s pass rush falling off a cliff in a year made our sack total drop too. 3 players causing pass rush decline through departure and age. Nielsen had a big part in why we have a top defense but it seems more of a talent issue than coaching causing a slide. Nielsen himself learned from DA on how to form an elite pass defense.

We improved a lot in takeaways after Nielsen and Richard left though. INTs nearly tripled under Marcus Robertson and Woods in ‘23. Total takeaways doubled. Pass rush got better down the stretch but we really lack pass rush talent outside of Bresee, Granderson, Davis and Baun (if re-signed).
