Looking back at last year, could this be our major problem? Here we were with a new staff,a slew of new players, a lot of emotion and no one in the league really looking and bang, we are in the NFCCG. So, all is well for the off season, fill a few holes with what is believed to be not all pro players but ones that the staff think are good enough to get to that next step, and why not think that based on the success of the year. Fast forward to this year. Teams now know we are, or are thought off as the team to beat in the conference so no more free ride. We now are exposed as lacking so, could this year be better for us than last year once the season is over? No more rose colored glasses, the decision makers should have a much better idea of what this team needs. Last year was magic! Now with the magic gone and reality at hand I think the needs of the team are now more evident. Basically the short is, last year it seemed that all it needed was a tweak when this year should show them we need more! Does this make sense?

yes...it makes a lot of sense. We were way ahead of schedule last year. Maybe the staff overestimated our starters, thus bringing in backups (Simmons and Kaes) and tweaners (David) and gambled on Mare to complete the machine, only to have our flaws exposed...and the draft this year was clearly for long term than for immediate impact.

I trust Payton and Loomis will right the ship and I still don't think we are completely the wild card race yet, but we clearly have to play better than the last two weeks.

It happens all the time. Cinderella teams never repeat their magical seasons the next year. Payton didn't win all those games last year by chance, and this team didn't rally from 0-4 to win 4 in a row by accident either. We may finish at or below .500 this year, but it doesn't mean that Payton became a donkey overnight. He and Loomis will have a chance to evaluate everything this offseason and do what they think is necessary, and year 3 of Payton will tell us who he really is. I expect that we'll be back in the playoffs because he's a smart guy, he surrounds himself with good people, and his players are all hard-working and high character. He's just got to evaluate some of his game-management skills and learn from his mistakes, something I think he's willing to do. Add that to another year of free agency and the (hopeful) development of Robert Meachem and I think we'll be pretty close to speculating about playoff opponents this time next year.

yep, you got it right. With the success they thought they had more talent then they actually had. The saints saving grace may be that this is a one year setback if last years draft class can contribute, and they get a couple starters in FA and in the draft this year.

One other thought I had after writing this, is there any chance Payton brings in someone to help with the offense. I know he likes to call the plays and it all seemed easy last year, but does he maybe get the idea his attention maybe needed elsewhere. It seems head coach, offensive coordinator maybe too much. Wouldn't mind seeing him hire an offensive guy to help. Any thoughts on this part?

I don't think he'll ever not call the plays. I think we already have an OC in name that sits in the booth. I could be wrong though. Some coaches call their own plays, including alot of the greats. I don't see it as a huge problem.
