I'm not sure I get them. I went to a concert Friday night. And while the band was of a rock oriented genre, their music relies on subtlety of vocals and blending of instrument lines. Yet the live mix was so freaking loud I could discern none of it unless my fingers were in my ears.

Am I a prude? Do people like concerts so loud that the sound is distorted in your head?

I get why it happens, because the sound engineer is trying to get the sound to the back row/nosebleeds. The actual music does tend to suffer. I went to a Phantogram show not too long ago and they were cranked so loud the songs lost all their complexity. You couldn't even tell one bass note from the next (it all just sounded like one big droning buzz) and all the atmospherics were lost completely.

I wear earplugs to any performance with more than light amplification (essentially all but acoustic). I find that good earplugs make vocals easier to hear and also drown out crowd noise. Of course even with hearing protection I find some shows too loud if I'm shooting in front of the speakers for most of the show. I need to get some higher quality custom molded earplugs with swappable inserts.

A good set of decibel reducing plugs will go a long way. Vater makes a good set.

I was about to suggest Vater ear plugs. They drown out the noise so you can hear the music. I won't go to a concert without them now.

it depends on the venue

outdoor amphitheaters work out best for loud rock music

some indoor venues know how to balance audio output and some don't

I am forever damaged from two Ozzfest shows in my teens. They were outdoor shows in the late 90s. I was tired and decided to lean, face first against the left stage speakers that were about 2 1/2 stories high. Not a good idea I realized for the next 3 days...

I always find House of Blues in NO to be one of the better venues for sound. Their metal shows have the best sound of almost any venue IMO. I'm not a sound whiz, but just going by my (faulty) ear test.

Hard Rock Biloxi did a great job with Breaking Benjamin a few months ago.
