CINCINNATI - Macy's Inc. will close nine stores that employ a total of about 900 people, the retailer said Friday.

Macy's Returns in November 2008 Following Hurricane Katrina Damage

Kenner, La. - Macy's, Inc. (NYSE:M) announced plans today to open two stores in the New Orleans market in November 2008. A 188,000 square-foot store will reopen at Esplanade, and a new 228,000 square-foot store will open at Lakeside.

Together, the stores are expected to create approximately 360 new jobs.

"Returning to the New Orleans market has been a top priority for us," said Ed Holman, chairman and CEO of Macy's South, the division responsible for the Louisiana market. "We're looking forward to opening both stores and once again being a part of the vibrant, re-energized and evolving New Orleans community. We are dedicated to offering the latest in fashion and trend merchandise with outstanding customer service."

I'm surprised it took them this long. They expanded way too fast over the last couple of years. They purchased Foleys in Texas and Marshall Fields and didn't close that many stores.

BTW, Foleys was one of my favorite places to shop. Macy turned it to crap. Dillards is now my favorite department store (The Daniel Cremieux line rocks :) )

Yeah, it was a Foley's a year or so ago in LC, too...

Time to go cash in those cards.
