Here's my updated mock draft.......
1. Miami -- Chris Long, DE, Virginia. Still think that this is the pick. In the way that Parcells took Demarcus Ware, he takes Long.
2. St. Louis -- Jake Long, OT, Michigan. I am sticking with this pick as well. St. Louis has to keep Bulger on the field this season and Long is a bonafide LT talent which is hard to come by in the NFL.
3. Atlanta -- Matt Ryan, QB, Boston College. Changed my mind here from Dorsey to Ryan. Atlanta needs a new face for the franchise and a DT isn't going to solve Atlanta's problems. With Ryan and Turner, the offense might have a future.
4. Oakland -- Vernon Gholston, DE, Ohio State. This is a change as well from McFadden to Gholston. I think it's one of those two guys and defense wins out. The Reggie factor might come into play for McFadden and drop him out of the top 5.
5. Kansas City -- Sedrick Ellis, DT, USC. The Chiefs stun everyone and go with a DT not named Dorsey. Not that Ellis can't get picked before Dorsey, but many people have the Chiefs going offensive line here. There is no one worthy of the pick so the Chiefs take the defensive lineman.
6. New York Jets -- Darren McFadden, RB, Arkansas. The Jets sit back and let their guy come right to them. I really think the Jets are looking for a big name to fire up the Jets faithful and this should do the trick.
New England is on the clock and they are taking a long time. The clock is ticking and finally the card comes in.
Goddell comes to the podium......
"There has been a trade. With the 7th pick in the 2008 NFL draft, the NEW ORLEANS SAINTS select Glenn Dorsey, DT, LSU."
7. New Orleans -- Glenn Dorsey, DT, LSU. The Saints send the Patriots their first round pick number 10 and their third round pick number 78. Amazingly enough the Saints picks 10 (1300) and 78 (200) equal exactly what pick 7 is worth (1500), so it's a good fair trade for both teams. The Saints get a star to add to their defensive line that might look something like McCray, Grant, Dorsey and Smith!
8. Baltimore -- Brendan Albert, OT/G, Virginia. I really like Albert's versatility and he brings something that the Ravens need as well. He can plug into the offensive line now and take over next year for Ogden at LT.
9. Cincinnati -- Leodis McKelvin, CB, Troy. I know they have two picks invested in Hall and Joseph but their secondary was as bad as the Saints last season. With the DT's off of the board and no WR worthy of this pick, the Bengals take the first corner off of the board.
10. New England -- Dominique Rogers-Cromartie, CB, TSU. The Pats get their man at 10 and pick up the Saints third round pick in the process.
SAINTS DRAFT
7. Glenn Dorsey, DT, LSU. See above.....
40. Saints trade pick 40 to the Jaguars for picks 58 and 71, recouping the third round pick they gave up for Glenn Dorsey.
58. Tracy Porter, CB, Indiana. Wanted to find a corner who would likely be around at the end of round 2 and I think Porter fits the bill. Had 6 INT's last season with the Hoosiers.
71. Matt Forte, RB, Tulane. You know offense is getting in there somewhere and the Saints grab the Tulane grad and keep him in New Orleans.
113. Erik Ainge, QB, Tennessee. I think Sean Payton really wants to spend a pick on a QB and this is a logical place to do it. Too many mocks leave this pick off because they think it's going to the Jets. Everything I read said 2009 conditional, not 2008 4th.
146. Craig Steltz, S, LSU. Another HOMER pick, but I can't help it. The Saints need to bring another S in to compete, unless Aaron Glenn is going to play safety. Either way, for now I wanted a safety and I know what I am getting in Steltz.
