Huh, who knew it wasn’t just players kneeling for the Anthem, but NFL owners bend the knee to the President regarding this issue.

“Several NFL owners said in depositions that President Donald Trump factored into conversations about how to handle protests during the national anthem, The Wall Street Journal reported.

While testifying as part of the Colin Kaepernick collusion case, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said Trump spoke with him about the anthem.

"This is very winning, strong issue for me," Jones said Trump told him during a phone call. "Tell everybody, you can't win this one. This one lifts me."

Report: Trump appealed to owners on anthem

So I guess everyone has a price after all, rich or poor, old or young.

1. it's clearly an 'on the field' issue since penalties might be called
2. it's 45 and the owners playing politics and infusing it in football not members
3. Demario Davis, Cameron Jordan, Ben Watson have been outspoken about the issue
4. the last thread went SSF/Lockerroom/EE and was closed at 19 pages - people want to discuss the topic and no one is "ramming it down" anyone's throat who doesn't want to discuss
5. it's not the "same old story" since 45 & Goodell have brought to back to light - the 'respect the flag' crowd should appreciate that they're being dragged into this conversation by two of the biggest liars out there (as well as a draft dodger - you don't even have to believe he colluded with Russia to know that his "patriotism" is a complete sham)
anyway gonna post this before it gets moved

Not all of them. JETS owner.

That might make a little difference to some free agents on where to go. Smart football move.

The owners just want to rid themselves of this controversy and hope this will do it. We'll see.

I don't believe for one second that Jerry Jones is bending to will of Donald Trump. Trump has no leverage over Jones, Goodell, or the NFL for anything. This sounds like JJ is just using Trump as a scape goat for a decision that for better or worse, continues to blow up in the leagues face. And it will get worse when Week 1 comes and half the players openly defy the rule.

At every event I have ever attended where our National Anthem has been played I stand with my hand over my heart and sing along. At these events, and when watching on TV, I admit that it bothers me to see people standing around ignoring the event and at times I have commented on this lack of participation and what I perceive as a lack of respect.

That being said, my feelings about those who do not participate as I do is nothing, and I mean this in the strongest terms possible, nothing, compared with the feelings that I have regarding those who would deny individuals their freedom of speech.

Being an American is not a privilege, it is a responsibility.

Everyone has a Constitutional right to be angry, or disappointed, or even enraged; but no one has a Constitutional right to infringe on the rights of another citizen. Our responsibility as Americans is to understand our Constitution and what it really means and to stand up for those principals when anyone perverts them for their own personal gain.

The issue is not whether you agree with the statement behind these protest, but that you are free to disagree with this statement and those who politely and peacefully protest are free to do so.

This is what makes America great.

i'm sure Trump wouldn't hesitate to threaten to take away DoD ad spending on the NFL (whether he could do it or not)

I’ve served two combat tours.

It doesn’t offend me or disrespect anyone. There are probably better ways to get a message across than alienating most of the right, but hey...people aren’t smart.

We are all Americans who like football. That affects our lives way more than a federal government that has a difficult time passing an annual budget, much less any real life changing laws.

You all agree on about 98% of things in life, stop wasting 98% of your time arguing about the 2% you disagree on.

If you think standing up for an anthem is more important than respecting each other’s opinions or rights or speech, I respectfully disagree with you. Patriotism isn’t about who displays their love for a flag the most.
But it’s also fine that you don’t want to take part in something that you feel is disrespectful.
So let everyone kneel before the Anthem like theyve been doing and stand for the song and everyone just enjoy a football game without making the whole thing about why the other side is wrong.

Why is Trump fake for his opinion ? If NFL players can kneel, isn't that an opinion ? I see no difference.

Trump is playing to his base. The President should try to be a unifying presence, not calling those who kneel SOBs and suggesting they leave the country. He doesn't have to agree with kneeling, but there was a much more presidential way to show his disapproval while recognizing that there are issues this country needs to address.

Also draft dodgers get to have their opinions on patriotism stamped with a giant asterisk
(And now that we’re on the EE) as do Russian colluders hashtag allegedly

Trump won a lawsuit vs the NFL and was awarded only $3 ....so he is just tickled pink to cost the league some money and some pain. He loves stirring this pot, and the NFL is too fractured to coherently stand up for anything.

He will bait them players at a drop of the hat, then step back and let the owners say dumb things they get deposed for.

This is very winning. Strong issue for me.

This one lifts me.

He really can't seem to care about anything unless it is about him. And he speaks like he's illiterate.
