So far this season, I've liked the new kickoff rules. It's fun watching how some of the kickers are starting to play around with various kicking styles, and the strategy around returns.
However, yesterday, I noticed something. When the Saints were penalized for a personal foul on the extra point, the penalty was....nothing. When all was said and done, there was almost no change to how the ensuing kickoff played out.
Under the previous rules, a team kicked off from the 35, the receiver caught the ball around the goal line, and the kick coverage guys were running full speed around the 30 or so yard line. With a 15 yard penalty, the team kicked from the 20, the receiver would catch the ball around the goal line, and the kick coverage guys were running full speed around the 40 or so yard line. In essence, the return team got a 5-10 yard bonus to start the kick return.
