That song still gives me feels - especially now as my kids are aging into middle school.
2 lyrics
"a dragon lives forever, but not so little boys"
and
"as I hung up the phone it occurred to me, he'd grown up just like me/
my boy was just like me"

automatic lump in the throat - doesn't matter the context

Fearless Dragon is what his daughter called him.

i've made both my kids watch the animated TV Special from 1978. they were not impressed...

I've never even heard of that. The song should stand on its own, though. I can't really imagine an animated version dragging it out to 30 minutes (an hour?) being any good.

'Fearless dragon' seems a little much for a guy convicted of sexual assault of a minor.

The worst part is the best he could muster for explaining why it happened was essentially "It was a different time. Sorry."

Also Jimmy Carter pardoned a dude who sexually assaulted a 14 year old girl.

It's actually wild how that story was buried for so long and he just went about his life and career like it never happened.

I actually thought they had all passed already.

Let us know if this confirms your suspicions

He at least added, ‘lots of music guys were doing it’

article I saw mentioned that when he campaigned for a candidate, the opposition would run ads about him

Understandably

I remember hearing this song as a young kid at my aunt’s house, but she was a beatnik and we didn’t listen to that kind of music in the home, so I never heard it again. I remembered a line or two from the lyrics, but not enough to remember the entire song, so the hook would stick with me, but nothing more (I was 6 and the internet was a decade from being a thing, and Shazam was like 2 decades away).

2.5 decades later I was watching Mad Men and the song came on, and it was like a light went on. A faint memory was new again.

Anyway, enjoy.
