So I see that Orlando won their division this season but is slated for a play-in spot. Is this a recent change in the league with division titles meaning nothing for the playoffs? I can't remember.

NBA changed division winners being guaranteed a top 4 seed back in 2015 about a decade before the play-in. Best overall records gets the higher seed since then.

A division winner could not make the playoffs/play-in altogether if their overall record doesn’t finish within the top 10 conference seeds.
