So my young nephew ask very interesting football questions .

Latest one was, what would happen if the Saints started their first several series with Tayson Hill at quarterback instead of Carr ? How would that affect the opposing defense to start the game ? They practice all week to face Carr and now have to adjust for a different style QB

I know it won't happen, but it got me curious

Would that throw off their game plan?

Have Hill run an RPO type offense for the first couple series and then bring Carr out for the remainder of the game?

For those that have played or coached defense, would that mess you up to start the game?

Would that be a good ploy , especially against a good aggressive defense like Philly's defense?

What say you?

I can't speak for every defense, but I'm sure they would have spent some time during the week preparing for Taysom QB plays... So while it would probably throw the opposing defense off their plan quite a bit... It's not something I think a good DC wouldn't be somewhat prepared for.

Preparing for one player and getting another happens pretty often due to injuries. Teams are used to it, and good ones prepare for it.

If it were me... I'd probably switch to 46 style front and play a lot of zone behind it to counter...

But being as were are talking about Taysom here... I might also ball up into a fetal position and cry if it where not me.

Speaking from an offensive stand point. This is a bad idea.

The first 15 plays are scripted for a reason. Runing these plays that have been rehearsed and practiced allows the offense to get into Rhythm. Not having your primary QB in for their first several series means he is literally coming in cold and would have no rhythm.

It's not a good ploy and you would be shooting yourself in the foot.

I don't think anyone needs to have played or coached a particular sport to understand that you don't take the ball away from the hot hand. I love me some Taysom, but Carr is dropping dimes and throwing darts out there.

I know conventional wisdom says it's a bad idea. But, I was really hoping Sean Payton would lean into it with Jameis/Taysom in 2021. I thought his system with the personnel groups swapping in and out would have made for an interesting experiment.

I willing to bet a TH at QB package is probably somewhere in Coach Ks 300 page playbook.

But right now, Coach K is STILL
callin plays off da first 10-15 pages!!!

😂🤣😂

Yes plus the question would also be whether it actually yields an advantage. Sure, they might not be expecting it but that doesn’t mean the Saints offense would just march down and score. An NFL defense can react and I’m sure they have some kind of prep for Taysom QB sets.

If, even with it being a surprise of sorts, your primary Carr offense is still more likely to be effective and give you a better chance of scoring (which is probably the case), there’s not much reason to go with this surprise Taysom drive.

I understand your point and respect your opinion but a defensive coordinator's head would explode if that were to happen.

He's been here a while so I highly doubt that it would create a rhythm issue.

Prepping for Taysom Hill and stopping him are two hugely different things.

I'm sure it would force an adjustment. No different than, us showing outside zone and zone blocking and that's what they prepare for. Then this week, we come out with more man blocking schemes, power running, and pulling guards etc. That would be somethign they haven't studied for and well, we've all taken a test that we weren't prepared for.

I've never coached football or played defense.

Those long passes for touchdowns would not have happened and might have been intercepted instead.

My singular onfield credential is my time playing pass rusher on a flag football team.

I’d load the box and play my corners slightly off. Taysom can throw deep but there’s not much proof on film that he can get it to the hashes or up the intermediate seams. If he completes some quick outs and slants, I’d hope my cornerbacks limited YAC by making quick tackles.
