Quincy Jones has passed (Mod Edit) (2 Viewers)

I thought she stayed up all night, primarily to await word of celebrity deaths ?

In any case, the word ‘icon’ gets thrown a lot, but he truly was .. here is my favorite QJ jam , from Soul Train no less:

.

Although he wasnt the original executive producer of the then-NBC hit series until its second season, I don't believe Will Smith becomes one of Hollywood's biggest, most financially successful film stars if it werent for Quincy Jones taking and re-shaping "Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" into one of the 90's biggest shows, even though the show almost got cancelled a couple of times like in 1993 and 1995.

"Fresh Prince" was the key transition stage that turned Smith from a gimmicky, late 80's comical rapper who's fame was waning to first a TV star then using that as a spring board for "Bad Boys", " Independence Day", and the "Men in Black" films and you have Quincy Jones to thank mostly for all that.

He was also the producer for Leslie Gore's major hit, "Its My Party" and helped launch Micheal Jackson's massive, almost superhuman 1980's success when he produced 1979's "Off the Wall", after first meeting him and began honing his talent on the set of the musical film, " The Wiz" and he produced "Thriller" and "Bad". Michael Jackson probably doesn't become the " King of Pop" if not for Jones' direction, focus and professionalism. When Jackson and Jones first called Eddie Van Halen to ask him if he could record some heavy metal lead solos for Thriller's "Beat It", at first van Halen slammed down the phone on them, thinking the call was a stupid prank before Jones and M.J. called back again to confirm that it was indeed them and not a joke.

I heard the actor playing Redd Foxx's son on "Sanford and Son" didnt exactly get along off-set at times and that he threatened to leave the show on a number of occasions due to money.
heard at the time that studio execs renamed him demand wilson

r.i.p., mr jones

One of the best producers alltime
RiP

Will Smith was going to be a mega star regardless
Possibly, but Quincy bringing such a focused, intelligent, and professional attitude and aura to the making and popularity of the series as its executive producer contributed to its success and the show helped lead to Smith becoming an A-list Hollywood celebrity by 1996 with "Bad Boys" movies and "Independence Day". Without that show's success over six seasons, he doesn't become nearly as much as that megastar where nearly every movie he was in for next 20 years were blockbuster commercial box office successes until that head-shaking incident with Chris Rock at the 2022 Oscars.

Over the past two years since that incident, FWIW, I have wondered on occasion just how seriously close the idea or notion of telling those LAPD security guards that " Yes, I will press charges and ruin this MF'er" went through Chris Rock's mind in the immediate aftermath of that embarassing, stupid incident instead of not wanting to make a wild, public spectacle even worse and letting it go.

Of all the great things he wrote, Soul Bossa Nova is probably my favorite.
(putting the intro from Goldmember rather than the original film because Quincy appears in this one)

Also, I think it would be easier to number the stars than list all the things he produced...

RIP to a great artist.

Producer, director, writer, creator….what an incredible legacy he leaves us. Wow, thanks and you will be missed Mr Jones.

Definitely different stories as to why he didn't continue working with Michael Jackson

Some say MJ simply wanted a younger and hipper sound and wanted to go in a different direction

And while Michael was a star before Off the Wall he was no where near the mega star he became and the story goes he wanted to be treated and deferred to as that mega star and Quincy had no problem telling him no and MJ didn't like that so Jones was out

A similar dynamic happened between Eddie Murphy and director John Landis. Eddie was a promising up and comer when making Trading Places, he was a bonafide superstar by the time Coming to America came around but Landis didn;t treat him that way

RiP to a true Legend!

2 of my favorites from him was The Duke and Q's Jook Joint! That was some GREAT music!

PS. I know this may be too soon...but...Rashida, if you need someone to comfort you, drop me a line.

Edit: Props to @Optimus Prime for pointing out my omission!
🤦‍♂️ HOW COULD I FORGET TO ADD THE SOUNDTRACK TO THE WIZ!!!!!!🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

That movie had a tremendous impact on little DJ and many from my generation, so mush so, it was played in our classrooms. It was both fun and enlightening seeing so many black stars onscreen at the same time.
