The Associated Press reports the Saints were in the mix for former Browns backup QB Joe Flacco prior to his deal with the Colts:

Sucks we didn't land our target, but it does show that we do indeed want legitimate backup QB experience behind Carr, which honestly surprises me a bit.

I figured we'd roll with Haener/Hill with MAYBE a marginal veteran type like a Brandon Allen.

I don't see it that way.
Although I hope Haener can develop into at least our backup or even more.....he's just not ready.
Let's see how he performs in preseason this year and maybe he'll be the choice next year.

Last year, I think 66 QB’s started an NFL game. A veteran backup still offers plenty of value.

If they were looking to sign Flacco, they still see Haener as their developmental QB. Pat and Jim say you need three (starter, backup, developmental) for a complete QB room.

Please stop with the Haener stuff, we played the same game with the other guy we drafted a few years ago. I don't even know why we waste time on these guys, they're just scout team arms. It's just a throwaway pick until we draft a guy in the first or second.

I think Jimmy G probably coming in. And nothing is a knock on Haener. Competition competition competition and TH7 can’t be a full time #2. Too valuable in other ways that get eliminated if he is full time backup.

It is surprising me too, as I thought that we would try to work Haener into QB2, but it does make sense that we would go after Flacco, considering Stefanski is a Kubiak guy.
