The Saints have hired four head coaches that were previous head coaches with other teams ( Hank Stram, Bum Phillips, Mike Ditka and Dennis Allen). They coached a combined 188 games and only won 67 of those games for a winning percentage of only 35%. Sometimes the available “retreads” are available for a reason. Just thinking.

This retread won 43 games over the past four years. That’s better than most of the coaches we’ve hired retread or otherwise.

Or maybe those old Saints teams were just flat out bad, being coached during a non-parity era of the league and under an awful ownership era of the team, and were going to stink regardless of who was coaching them.

Ditka and Allen were bad, I’ll give you that.

Point is, team circumstances and the individuals involved need to be examined more before declaring “retread = always bad.”

I can think of several "retreads" that were successful - Parcels, Belichick, Reid, Carroll.

I remember the days when experience played a huge part in a hiring process. Now, everyone is drawn to the new shiny toys. Not saying I want a former HC bc I am very open to someone with no HC experience. I just don’t think the old heads should be easily dismissed

And none of them won a ring with a different team than their original Super Bowl team.

No head coach that has won a Super Bowl has ever won it with a second team. Just saying. Carroll and Reid WENT to Super Bowls with their first teams but didn't win.
Parcells WENT to a Super Bowl with his second team. But didn't win.

I’m not a fan of retread coaches but I like McCarthy even if he’s pushing into the old guard. And to think if he would come here and bring success that could be shoved back in the cowboys face, that is very appealing to say the least
Nonetheless, a nice new shiny toy is exciting

I’m conflicted. I think if it was McCarthy, I’d say go, but another retread,? No. I want shiny and new, and if it breaks so be it.

I wasn't even thinking about super bowls. I was thinking about coaches that had some success with their second or third team.

Hmm, somebody better tell Denver they have no chance

Why is something that only 6% of the coaches that have ever head coached accomplished the ultimate measure of success?

WINNING SUPER BOWLS IS EXTREMELY HARD. ONLY 35 MEN HAVE DONE IT.

The fact that these men put their program in place and merely got their teams to the Super Bowl is impressive in itself.

The fact that Parcells got the god awful Patriots to the Super Bowl in the mid 90s was one of the biggest feathers in his cap. That’s a huge accomplishment, and people are losing sight of this.

In his 16 years as a HC his teams have 8 division titles and 12 playoff appearances. He's won a Super Bowl. His offenses are always effective and historically some of the best.

Green Bay got stale. Dallas got dysfunctional. We aren't attracting the top coaching candidates and the timing of him coming on the market, he's coached here before and the way things are shaking out with the other hires makes this an easy top choice. Unless Gayle steps in again and says we are going an entire new direction with the team, this is also a good hire for Loomis imo. An experienced, winning coach that should have an easier time dealing with the cap issues and veteran players.
