I remember when the announcers would act surprised when he had a good game, and I was guilty too at first. Then I came to the realization that Wayne was a damn good RB on bad teams. Wayne never could lose the "underachiever" handle. RIP Wayne, your talent didn't go unnoticed by those who watched your games every Sunday.

He did it all for the conservative Bum Phillips' offense. A fan favorite.

I think around 1982 we were at a sparsely attended NBA preseason game at Lakefront Arena between the Sixers and the Hawks. A number of the Saints players were there. From 15 rows up, Wayne would yell out to Moses Malone, "hey Moses, you know Lindsey?"... making fun of Lindsey Scott because why would Moses Malone know who he was?

He was our first version of Pierre Thomas before Pierre was born. Shortly after he seemed to come out of nowhere, I remember Brent Musberger (maybe it was Phyllis George) and the NFL on CBS doing a big story about him. Rest in peace Wayne.
