The Q&A
Remake the Snake?
For Kurt Russell, there's only one true ''Escape From New York'' Plissken -- and it isn't the Scottish guy that's been cast in the remake

KURT REPLY ''People come up to me and say, 'You played Snake Plissken.' I didn't play Snake Plissken,'' says Russell, ''I created him!''

Chris Nashawaty is a senior writer for EW, and author of EW.com's DVD Insomniac columnFor movie geeks of a certain age — and let's be honest, a certain gender — Kurt Russell's eyepatch-wearing badass Snake Plissken in Escape From New York is, was, and ever shall be the epitome of cool.

So when Variety reported last week that a remake of the 1981 John Carpenter classic was in the works with Scottish actor (and newly minted 300 star) Gerard Butler as the new Snake, a collective grumbling could be heard. Well, it turns out the diehard fans aren't the only ones grumbling: Russell isn't exactly thrilled about the idea either.

Eventually, Hollywood will simply eat itself alive. I blame Carpenter for this one. The Halloween debacle isn't his fault as he no longer owns the franchise, but he is pioneering this one. When will Hollywood rediscover their originality?

i don't think that hollywood is out of ideas, i think they are just scared to make movies that are not the norm....think about it, there has to be people out there just as creative as tarantino or rodriguez, but they are not getting work because studios are afraid to push the envelope.....this is why we have 284 romantic comedies a year.....if it sells, why bother changing it.....taking on new ideas is a recipie for failure in their eyes....look no further than the music industry for proof of this

It reminds me of when Van Halen was recording seemingly nothing but cover songs, their producer told them, "When you remake a hit, you're halfway there."

Hollywood knows that if they remake a hit movie, they can make easy money without having to come up with ideas.

Just a little tidbit on Tarantino/Rodriquez. The current cut of Grindhouse couldn't come close to an R rating. I saw it on the ticker while watching Attack of the Show. I would love to see the cut they showed the ratings board:)
