S Tyrann Mathieu agrees to a paycut to lower his cap hit: 1-year, $3.5 million deal worth up to $7.25 million (9 Viewers)

I'm glad he's on the team, but I hope to see him on the field less. He's a spot we need to upgrade on the field. Love his football IQ and savvy, but father time is undefeated, he's not an effective every down player anymore.
In a 4-2-5 scheme he should be the in the box safety so he can go back to roaming the field, we need safety and edge rush help on defense so I believe we will see multiple safeties signed and drafted.

I believe that Staley's system has both Safeties sometimes drop into the box at the snap and sometimes cover deep. So, whoever plays Safety needs to be able to do both. I think it's why they let Will Harris go for a relatively low contract. They likely saw him as only an in the box Safety.

I do wonder if Tryann will end up playing in the Slot.? I think the Slot in Staley's system is often called the "star" position because it lets the Slot roam the field, but they are often used in the box to stop the run. And the matchup zone and pattern matching that Staley tends to use may mean that Tryann's loss of speed is less of an issue because it will limit his man coverage and how often he has to cover deep.

Of course, I also think Alontae Taylor fits that position but maybe they want him on the outside or maybe they want him to move to Safety?

Fantastic person and at one point in time an elite player.

Father time is (almost) undefeated and he was more than one step slower last year.

Our secondary is looking really suspect without Harris, Shon, and Adebo.

Maybe he’ll stop making “business decisions” on the field now that he has his seemingly last professional contract is secured.
