Saints Restructuring LB Demario Davis' Deal

According to Mike Triplett, the Saints are restructuring LB Demario Davis' contract. Triplett says this will be a traditional restructure and not a pay cut. Per Over The Cap, the Saints can save $5.6 million

This is cool. As long as the Saints keep him clean the way the Ravens kept R Lewis clean in the back half of his career Davis should be good for 2 more years.

I'm curious if they'll have him lose weight, which should help to. Ray got down to the 230 lb range later in his career. Down from the 245 range he played at for along time.

It's Cam Jordan and Tyrann Mathieu that we need to avoid kicking the can down on as much as possible.

The elephant in the room is Taysom Hill. I have no idea how that contract is going to go, as far as renegotiating vs. restructuring.

the good thing about this is DD will be able to use his smarts as he physically drops off to limit the fall off in play, plus its hard to replace his leadership, he should retire a saint anyway.

For the most part, we have let defenders walk rather than give them new contracts these last few years. From 2021-now, looking at contracts with an AAV of at least $3m/yr (around comp free agent level), we have signed $49m worth of free agents while letting $94m out the door (-$45m net).

I think you need to let this train of thought go. If this was still Dennis Allen's team, that logic would make some sense. It's not. The new staff will not have any loyalty to the players on the current roster. The new staff inherited a team that they are most definitely going to change to fit want they want to do. That may not include players we as fans really like...or don't like. We just don't know because we don't know what this team is looking for. In 3 years, we'll probably be able to guess their every move. But today? Let it go and watch it play out because this a new movie and we don't don't know if it's a horror, comedy, coming of age, thriller, drama, or a feel-good movie. Boy I'm hoping it's the last one. Either way, I'll say it again, there's going to be lots of changes we wouldn't have expected if the staff hadn't changed so dramatically.

This may be the offseason that we’re aiming solely for under the radar FA signings while the cap space clean up a bit for 2026-2027 offseasons. The double digit AAV FAs that we’ve added in the last 3 years haven’t really match their salaries across a full season. May be smarter to not rush to repeat those type of signings and focus on maximizing early round 2025 draft picks.
