Saints Cap Moves: Derek Carr restructured, Erik McCoy restructured; J. Williams released; cap space is at -$8,543,537 (246 Viewers)

Again, you’re missing the point. If you have a HOF QB you should draft another quarterback before he retires. We didn’t do that and look where we are versus the Packers who did exactly that.

Your sort of short term thinking is exactly the same as Mickey Loomis’, which is why we’re currently one of the worst teams in the NFL.
How did that work out for the Pats ? They wasted a pick on Jones and let Brady go and stunk for yrs until they drafted Maye and the jury is still out on him. The point YOU are missing is that just because you should be sorta looking for your HOF QB successor does not mean he will be available to you. AND if you've made the playoffs 4 yrs in a row and draft in the high 20's it would be foolish to trade multiple 1st rd picks to take a shot at a QB that will not play for 2-3 yrs. AND just what if you trade up and draft a Trey Lance ? THAT'S how GMs get fired SMH

You are once again delusional if you think we are one of the worst teams in the league. We were HURT last yr that and a bad HC were our biggest problems. Stop looking at things in a vacuum

“Fletcher is livid” is the exact same sentence as “Fletcher is currently breathing” and “Fletcher has blinked at least twice within the last hour”

That man is never ever happy with the state of New Orleans sports teams and is never not thinking up a harebrained trade idea to post
Fletcher is a hack always has been always will be

Eh? If they wanted to remove the no trade clause, Carr would have to agree to it. How does that make sense?

Also, you can’t change the length of a contract after it’s been signed and removing guaranteed income is literally a paycut.

You’ve, inadvertently, just said they were trying to agree to a pay cut, because everything else you listed is either impossible or illogical.
Again not true , They could have been talking about adding void yrs and that would need player approval, just like we did with McCoy. There are a few things that could have been talking to Carr about other than a pay cut .

I've already broke it down in other posts. We are 16th and that's only b/c of Carr, DD, Cam and Taysom. Remove those guys and we drop significantly. It's not hard to understand.

Yes this myth about us having an old roster is funny , They look at it in a vacuum. DC is 34 but QB's play well almost to their 40's. Offfensive linemen play well in their early to mid 30's . And some plkaywer that are in their 30's may not be starters

Eh? If they wanted to remove the no trade clause, Carr would have to agree to it. How does that make sense?
That's my point. Loomis said there were things to work on with his contract. That just means things that require both parties to agree to. A pay cut is just one of the things that both parties would have to agree to, so Loomis may have been referring to things that weren't pay cuts.

Also, you can’t change the length of a contract after it’s been signed and removing guaranteed income is literally a paycut.
Can't both parties agree to a new contract to replace the old one? Maybe the NFL doesn't allow that but it's commonly done outside the NFL.

You’ve, inadvertently, just said they were trying to agree to a pay cut, because everything else you listed is either impossible or illogical.
Everything I said is possible if both parties agree to it, unless the NFL doesn't allow renegotiating the length of the contract. The other things are renegotiable, but both parties would have to agree to it.

So, no, I didn't "inadvertently just say they were trying to agree to a pay cut." The fact is that Loomis could have been referring to things that aren't pay cuts.

I can not find a single quote from anyone in the Saints organization that they were asking Carr to take a pay cut.

Wonder if they’ll try the ol’ Friday afternoon news dump thing to announce a Derek Carr extension. 😂

Guess we went with the late Saturday evening news dump maneuver. Even more slick.

Regardless of if it helped mitigate the fallout or not, don’t think for one second that this wasn’t done intentionally. lol

Adding void years makes no sense since the contract already has enough years to do a max restructure. 5 years is the most you can prorate a signing bonus and it must include the current year.
I think they wanted Carr to defer part of the $40M to next year. If that deferment was guaranteed to be paid next year then while technically it is considered a pay cut this year and requires the player’s permission, In reality he still gets every penny.

We all knew the Saints were gonna do this, but fans had a glimmer of hope Loomis would do the right thing. Now we are stuck with Carr for the foreseeable future and will be in 9-8 or 8-9 purgatory forever. Yay!!!
They are only stuck with him for 2025. They can cut him next year and even with the dead money save over $9M.

I understand restructuring Carr so you don’t have to restructure a ton of other vets. I get this also allows for signing some free agents and draft picks. I got it.

But…as a fan and seeing the general fan reaction to this…ehhh. I think most people wanted a completely new Saints era with Moore and Carr, rightly or wrongly, is forever tied to DA. So that DA vibe might linger.

He’s also just not liked by the fans in a way I haven’t seen in a long time. It might have been too hard to do but damn I wish this was a true fresh start and turning of the page.
Gonna be a rough time in the dome if the offense comes out of the gate the same way they have the last few seasons. Either an empty or hostile dome and pitchforks coming out for Carr if he doesn’t play well.

If the offense comes out the gate the same way they did last season, definitely won’t be a tough time, or have you forgotten the games before McCoy went down last season?
