Saints met with top QB prospect Cam Ward [Schefter: CLE, NYG or maybe Saints have to make an offer compelling enough for #1 pick]

I've seen this said a few times, but it isn't true.
Saints traded the pick #18, and the future 1st (plus other assets) for pick #11 and #19.

Penning was selected with pick #19. We could have selected Penning at #18 that year without the trade.

Olave was the player selected at #11, and who the Saints set themselves up to select by trading away the future first for.
The Saints themselves see that trade as how I described it so...

A trade up for Ward would be CATASTROPHIC if he didn't become the next Mahommes. It would clear out the FO and the coaching staff, everyone gets fired. Loomis could save his job if he married Mrs.B.

The only reason the 9er FO and coaching staff survived the Trey Lance debacle is that they had a pretty good team when they made the trade, and they got very lucky with Purdy.

I like CKM and still believe in Ireland and Loomis. But if a proven HC like Shanahan and a former player like Lynch can make as big of a mistake as Lance, does ANYONE trust this FO and brand new HC to pay what would likely be multiple 1sts and probably 2 2nds and maybe Olave, to get a guy that is the best QB in a BAD QB draft class?
Lance had thrown like 250ish passes in HS/college combined. Shanahan didn't want Lance (he wanted Mac Jones), Lynch did as he was chasing the ghost of Mahomes and took an extremely extremely raw prospect trying to do so. Maybe not the best comparison comparing Ward to Lance.

If the Saints have already made an offer and Titans declined, then historically the Saints are done making offers and have moved on. That is what some sports influencers are saying has happened. Only the Saints and Titans know for sure.

Another historical tendency of the Saints, they don't get into bidding wars with multiple teams. They make their opening bid and sometimes increase it a little, but they don't get caught up in bidding wars. If the Titans turn it into a multiple team bidding war, the Saints will likely sit it out.

The Saints might be using deceit to try to start an early QB run to push other player(s) down to them or within reach of a less expensive trade up.
That's... not what is happening at all. They want a QB. They loved Ward (as in their scouting) long before they even had a head coach. They'll try like hell to move up to #1 to get Ward and if they fail, they then might try to trade to #2 for Shedeur.

I do think they have a cutoff point for each move but they are 100% gonna try like hell to do so. Reported it five days ago and now it's out nationally. Shrugs.

Ward fans.

Let me go ahead and ease your future disappointment.

If there could be less than 0% of us going from 9 to 1, then that’s what it would be. Saints are not in any capacity moving to 1.
I'm not even a Ward fan lol - not sure why a national reporter like Schefter would randomly throw the Saints as a team into the mix without there being truth to it!

There is honestly not much optimism to begin with. It’s pretty bleak. Ward would give me the first bit of optimism in this franchise that I’ve had since Sean Payton
Could not agree more.
the FO would be smart to realize the fan base echo’s that sentiment. Getting Ward would be a PR boom in New Orleans…lord knows we need it.
Amen.
Even if it’s a swing and a miss it’s a swing. A big one. I’m good either way but I would love the move, especially if Olave is part of the package. Nothing at all against him, I just believe he will be out of the league very soon.

I am a Ward fan and hope you’re wrong. I do think you’ll end up being correct tho, and that’s ok too. Just nail the picks if that’s the case.

If Ward replaces the Mayo man in Tennessee I’ll start watching my home team again. They’ve been more of a train wreck than our Saints.

Lance had over 300 atts in college alone, exaggerate much? and in his biggest yr he threw for 28TD and NO Ints. AND he had 1100yds rushing in 2019
This is not a comparison of Ward to Lance it's evidence that trading up for a QB does not work out way more times than it does. You could insert Zach Wilson in in place of Lance or RG3 or any number of QB that were traded up to get and were either busts or had very underwhelming careers and were not worth the trade up

Spot on. Historically it has not worked.

That will make it all the more incredible when we pull the trade off and Ward leads us to multiple Super Bowls.

I'm sure Ward will go #1 but I'd bet $$ that he will be in the same company as a Mayfield or a Lawrence or maybe a Murray. Above Young but below the other QBs taken @ #1 like Burrow , Williams , Goff. It would take yrs but I bet you a $20 donation to SR that he never gets to the elite status

LOL the thing is that as fans we can say " What the heck , go for it " It's not our careers on the line if it's a catastrophe. We don't get fired for taking this HUGE gamble. If it blows up in Loomis and CKM and Ireland's faces they may never get the job they want in the league again.

Man I'll crack up some beers the minute Ward is off the board and the Saints still sitting with all their picks. If we trade up to No1, the Draft would be already over before it even began...

Huh? He’s done it plenty of times. It’s called speculation.

I’m not saying the saints wouldn’t throw a feeler out there to see what the cost would be, but there’s literally NO chance of it happening. Yes, this is pure speculation on my part. I don’t think the Saints were ever truly interested in trading up to 1. I don’t think if they were we hear about their interest in Ward as early as we did.

Again, pure speculation on my behalf. I could very well be wrong. Wouldn’t surprise anyone haha.

Totally agree with that. I’d argue tho that the team has sucked for several years now and already floundering without the big trade up.

I also think Loomis could throw a baby and a puppy off of a high rise and not get canned. That’s another topic tho, and no I’m not knocking him or advocating for his firing.
