What an embarrassment of riches the Saints had during their Super Bowl run with the Offensive Line they had. Jonathan Goodwin, Jahri Evans, Carl Nicks, Jon Stinchcomb and Jermon Bushrod. The crazy thing is Bushrod probably was the weakest link and he became a Pro Bowler. The other crazy thing is correct me if I'm wrong none of those guys were 1st round picks. Sure is a far cry to what's going on now with the Saints in the trenches.

IIRC, Nicks had a high grade, maybe even 1st, but fell b/c of off the field stuff.

Funny thing, looks like Penning has found his spot. Fuaga will lock down LT. McCoy has Center and Ruiz at RG. Draft a stud LG and a good backup Swing tackle and Center and the O line is fixed. Maybe not that level, but let them play a couple seasons together with limited injuries and they'd be a formidable line.

Saints had invested a lot in the line previously before that with 1st round picks in Roaf, Turley and Naeole. Sprinkled in with vet and Super Bowl champion Fontenot at center. Very stout line. Lots invested in round 1 picks.

Not only was that OL talent elite, but they stayed relatively healthy. I don’t remember many missed games due to injury on the OL between 2009-2012.

We averaged over 5 yards a carry during our Super Bowl run. I think our running game was tops in the league. Brees was great, but go back and watch the Arizona “bat game”and the push we were getting up front. It was fun to watch.

My hope is still that Kubiak can bring that tough, physical style of play back.

That is also a product of Drew Brees. His quick decisions/release limited how long the line had to hold up for. Less time pass blocking lowers the chances of getting mauled by 6’5”, Olympic sprinting Sumo Wrestlers.

Honestly this is another topic but after watching the pelicans first few games and looking at their injury list after a couple weeks of play and looking at the Saints injury list Ms. Benson needs to completely clean out and replace the entire medical staff. Both of her teams are decimated by injury every year so something is wrong with Ochsner Sports Medicine. I don’t know if it’s their rehab and trainers, dietitians or if it’s doctors being overly cautious and keeping players out when most staffs would have them playing with pain killers and anti-inflammatory shots. I am sure a giant medical behemoth like Ochsner pays a ton of cash to be the teams’ medical provider/sponsor but whatever it is, is not worth it both teams are in shambles with injuries.

I know Ruiz does his thing, but I don't think road grader when I watch him. I'm curious if we actually upgrade both Guard positions. I think the only 2 lineman on the team who can impose their will on a regular basis is Fuaga and Penning. If KK and the offensive staff want to create an identity and do just that, both OG positions would be upgraded. They'd probably have to draft those guys b/c they don't normally come available.

I’ve said this before and agree completely. Look at the Saints and Pels. Both need to move on from Ochsners because that’s the common denominator for two way-too often injured teams

Nicks and Evans were the best G tandem in the NFL.....Had it not been for injury/off the field stuff Nicks was a HOFer IMO.....
