Update Saints officially request to interview Commanders OC Kliff Kingsbury (6 Viewers)

I am not all that impressed with his schemes--still. He relied on Kyler to make plays and has done the exact same thing while lucking into Jayden. The use almost no creativity, keeping the only playmaker they have --Terry McLaurin-- anchored most always to the left side and it gets him taken out of the game when the opposing team play sides with a strong CB (phi). I've seen very little motion incorporated in what they do, too. I've been much more impressed with Brady, Moore and esp Coen.

It's becoming very obvious that the Saints have a "type".

Probably not a fair thing to conclude…our interview pool is very diverse and full of different background types.

I do think young, offensive minded HCs are somewhat in vogue currently, so I think they’re diving deep into that realm as a result.

Teams want the next McVay, McDaniel, O’Connell, LaFleur, etc.

I don't mind this guy. I'm sure he learned a ton from his first time as a lot of coaches without long time NFL mentors don't immediately succeed and need time to evaluate what went wrong. He's turning Washington around pretty quickly with Daniels. I hope they actually do schedule an interview after this weekend.

I don't expect his tenure here would turn out any better than DA's. Washingtons offense is thriving off of JD. That guy is truely acting like a magician. The offensive scheme and plays aren't doing anything special to maximize output. JD's play is. This is called "Outplaying the coaching".

Paytons plays schemed to get a specific player open and to attack a certain part of the defense. Washington does not do this well at all. They're more of a "Get these players on these routes" and then JD is going to work to make things happen.

I could be mis-remembering, but it feels like there were some cultural issues and/or a lack of respect from the players towards KK during his AZ tenure. Seems like he was "on the hot seat" even before the team's record tailed off and his firing felt inevitable. The guy is obviously a bright/talented offensive mind, but we really need a culture builder as much as anything else and I'm skeptical that KK is that guy.

False start notwithstanding, I wouldn't be mad if he's the choice, but definitely feel we can do better.

We might be able to do better, but our best chance to do better is probably Glenn and he is interviewing with all 6 teams. There is a reasonable chance we don't get him and while I have some trepidation in hiring a retread, Kingsbury has a pretty good chance to succeed as a HC. I mean, his years in Arizona weren't really "bad". He was building the team before they had one bad year with an injured QB and I think he took the blame for a bad owner.

I would prefer the offenses that Brady and Moore run, but I'm not sure either of those guys are cut out to be head coaches where as we know that Kingsbury is really at worst and decent HC and could turn out to be great if he can learn from the job he had in Arizona.

The truth is I don't think this is a particularly great group of coaches to pick from outside of Ben Johnson and maybe Vrable. And Johnson still has to prove he can transition from OC to HC. Glenn is probably the next best and he has to prove the same thing. And, while he does appear to be a leader of men, Glenn would not be bringing an amazing defensive system with him. He's a good DC, but not really great which is what you would hope for on one side of the ball for your HC.

After that it's just a bunch of young OCs and Kingsbury. Either that or a bunch of retreads that have failed at one or more jobs.

He took that Cardinals team as far as they can go with Murray. And a team led by Murray isn't going very far. In the end, I don't see his tenure in Arizona as a negative thing.

What I'll say about KK is he had the cojones to go to a place that had just spent a top 10 pick on a QB the prior year and say "No, that's not the guy. We need to trade him for pennies on the dollar and spend a top pick on another guy." I think most coaches would've tried to make Rosen work.

Agreed. Well said.
