Saints Make Surprising Cut: Running Back Released from Practice Squad

The New Orleans Saints released running back Jacob Kibodi from their practice squad on Monday. This news was first reported by Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football.

With the room created by Kibodi's release, the Saints have re-signed WR/KR Jermaine Jackson to their practice squad. John Hendrix of the Saints News Network confirmed that move on Monday afternoon.

Jackson, an undrafted rookie out of Idaho, is a 5'7" and 170-Lb. return specialist. In his last two years with the Vandals, Jackson caught 101 passes for 1,644 yards and five touchdowns. His best season was in 2022, when he had 53 receptions 1,041 yards and four scores.

Jackson's incredible burst made him a feared returner at the FCS level. He returned three punts for a touchdown in his last two years with Idaho while averaging over 16.4 per punt return. He was equally dangerous as a kickoff returner.

An undrafted rookie, Kibodi had yet to appear in a regular season contest this year. He had a solid preseason, albeit in a Saints backfield crowded with talent. Kibodi was released on August 27, but quickly added back to the New Orleans practice squad.

I mentioned this in another thread, but this looks like they are either looking for other options to return Punts/Kicks and/or this is to send a message to Shaheed that dropping punts, especially inside the 3 won't be tolerated.

I also think it could be a good idea to get punt return duties off of Shaheed's back since he is our de facto #2 WR.

Twice in four games a punt returner put the ball on the turf. The first time the Saints got away with it because it came late in a game they had a massive lead in. The second time it cost the Saints 7 points in what would turn into a 2 point loss.

Agree, I believe we may see him out there soon. He’s a pretty small dude though

Yeah, baby! The band is back together and it's outta sight, uptight and feelin' alright!

But why remove a weapon from the return game? If anything, remove JW from back there. Everyone knows he’s not breaking a long return

I agree.

Parroting off your take a bit. The last thing the Saints need is to have Olave or Shaheed go down with injuries. That's the one two punch at the receiver position.

Shaheed had a career high 8 reception game against ATL on 11 targets. If KK plans on keeping him this active in the game plan maybe it is best to have other options in the return game.

For now, Jermaine Jackson has only been signed to the practice squad. He was in camp with the Saints and is familiar with the offensive system.

This dude is short at 5'6" / 5'7", 174 pounds. He's fast and has running back shiftiness. If elevated as a gameday active he could see some offensive snaps. Maybe a D. Sproles route out of the backfield. He has experience as a return man with big play ability. He may not just be a sign and developmental player to stash on the PS.
