When the Saints went about the process of strengthening their defense after the 2007 season ended, it was no surprise where they started -- in the middle.
Specifically, they looked at the middle of a linebacking corps that has not had a playmaker or an impact player since Pro Bowl pick Sam Mills in the mid-1990s.
So in their first major move of the offseason, they pulled off a trade for New York Jets middle linebacker Jonathan Vilma, the 12th overall pick of the 2004 draft, just minutes after the league year started on Feb. 29.
Vilma, 26, was coveted by former Saints coach Jim Haslett and defensive coordinator Rick Venturi when he came out of the University of Miami (Fla.) in 2004, but they were drafting 18th (Will Smith) and never got a shot at him.
