First of all, I’m no expert. But here are my thoughts after watching the game this morning.

Positives:

  1. Tony Jones Jr - fast with good vision. He had a really nice blitz pick-up on a Winston pass to Juwan Johnson.
  2. Davenport! Looks healthy. Fast and strong. Very quick off the ball.
  3. Adebo looks very good in coverage.
  4. First-team defense looks very strong. DL is getting to the QB quick and clogging holes. LBs look fast and making good reads. DBs look good in coverage.
  5. Ravens didn’t have a first down until the second quarter.
  6. Humphrey good hands on two contested catches. Once in the first quart. And again in the second on his TD catch.
  7. Gilikan (sp?) can really boom it! High and deep! Great hang time!

Negatives:

  1. Devonte Freeman - 2 fumbles
  2. Penalties and turnovers (6 turnovers in this game. Taysom and Winston each threw in INT. However, both should be credited to the WRs. Murray and Freeman each had a fumblee. Tony Jones Jr had a fumble.
  3. Turnovers, turnovers, turnovers. We gave Baltimore extra opportunities after the defense made good stops.
  4. I wasn’t really impressed with Amukamera. He was in coverage on several poor defensive plays, including the PI on the 2pt conversion. I hope he can play better. We might need him.

Other Notes:

  1. Taysom looked poised and decisive on his first drive. The Int on his second drive was due to the receiver stopping instead of continuing his route. (As noted by J Vilma). On the next drive, he had a near-int due to throwing low and inside instead of low and outside.
  2. Jameis looks to be making good reads when he’s given time. He started off a little slow, but looked solid in the 2-min drive at the end of first half, culminating with a TD pass to Humphrey. On the int, the ball hung in the air a little. But the play was there to be made by Humphrey. The int was because of a tipped pass by the WR.
  3. It was nice to see Michael Thomas on the sideline, going through the simulated motions of running and catching passes.
  4. Ian Book: Poised in the pocket. Keeps his eyes down field, even when rolling out. On his Int, the ball was under thrown due to pressure in his face. Still, overall promising.
  5. The defense got pretty good work against a mobile QB (Huntley). For the most part, they did a very nice job keeping contain in the 3rd quarter. But he also had a couple runs after shaking a defender in the backfield. In the 4th, the defense struggled a bit. But did come up with a turnover after giving up some yards.

Overall thoughts:

Yes, the turnovers and penalties are concerning. However, much of that is correctable. None of these QBs are Drew Brees. As Stinch stated, we need to adjust our expectations on that. The defense is going to be strong enough to keep us in games. I think both Taysom and Winston can win games for us. I still think this is a 9+ win team, vying for a playoff spot.

I noticed this too, and I think that was much more concerning than the INT, since I don't think he was being pressured or anything.

Again, I think we will just need to temper our expectations. We are used to Brees’ accuracy. Drew has a 67.7 career completion percentage, which is second only to Deshaun Watson (that surprised me). Most QBs, even very good QBs, misfire from time to time. I’m just hoping one of these guys will hit their mark enough to help us win. And I think they both can.

Very fair and accurate review of what actually happened. Thank you for the well thought out and balanced observations.

Personally, I think we should put Winston as the starter and split the backup role between both Book and Hill, giving Book an very slight edge over Hill (only because we will need Hill to go back & play his hybrid roles as RB, WR, TE until Michael Thomas returns to the lineup)

Only thing here is, I wouldn’t put Book ahead of Hill. He’s no where near there yet.

Didn't get to see the game live.. I did watch highlights so admittedly saw only a handful of plays. I thought Jameis' INT was thrown where he wanted but the receiver flipped the ball up... If Jameis had thrown it higher it would have been knocked down. I thought Taysoms' INt was similarly on the receiver who stopped running his pattern. So I think the QB's played fairly OK. I liked what I saw of Book also.

At the risk of being the master of the obvious we can't fumble or throw INT's.... but for the most part I thought we outplayed Baltimore.... our D played well....

Nothing deep but thought I'd add my limited observations

The only reason I suggested that because we might need Hill to play more as a WR or TE for the 1st quarter of the season, just until Micheal Thomas come back. Or unless, we find some diamonds in the rough during these roster cuts.

LB looks like a strength now.
Calloway is solid, I see why WR isn’t as much as a problem to SP as it is to the media.
Was interesting to see Onyemata playing DE and he still got pressure from there as well.
I would still like us to bring in a CB but I’m comfortable everywhere else

I'd say those thoughts line up pretty well with my observations.

Freeman came here to get even with all the arse woopins we put on the failclowns the past years, he didn't come to perform. JMO

My big takeaway is that Taysom cannot be QB1. I am not seeing significant improvement in his game. He is the most immobile athletic QB, I have ever seen. He just has no instincts for scrambling unless you call a running play for him. Also, his release is too slow and he takes too long to process plays. He just isn't a natural quarterback and at 30 plus years old, we don't have the time or money to let him develop when he is so much more valuable in other areas. Just my 2 cents.
