Sean Dawkins, WR primarily with the Colts and a former Saint, dead at 52 (edited) (1 Viewer)

RIP

Sean Dawkins, one of the most prolific receivers in Cal football history who went on to play nine NFL seasons, died Wednesday. He was 52.

Dawkins was a consensus All-American as a junior in 1992 before being selected 16th in the 1993 NFL draft. He played significant roles on coach Bruce Snyder’s teams of 1990 and ’91 that combined to go 17-6-1 and won two bowl games.

The second wide receiver chosen in the ’93 NFL draft, Dawkins played his first five seasons with the Indianapolis Colts. He played one season with the New Orleans Saints, two with the Seattle Seahawks and closed his career with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2001.

In 1998, Dawkins caught 53 passes for 823 yards (the second highest total in his career) from The Billy Joes, Kerry Collins, and Danny Wuerffel, playing in Danny Abramwicz's inept offense.

R.I.P.

The grandmother of the girl I dated in college at the time had a home health nurse who knew him. I think she watched his kids when he played here. Always heard good things.

I remember him from the awful Ditka era. Basically a “possession” guy in the NFL. Never really got to play with an elite QB, though. He was with the Colts before Manning got there.

Guy was pretty good, never got the chance to play with a good QB though sadly. He was basically our #1 wide receiver for us his one year here and I thought he showed out well despite the carousel we gave him at QB.

One of the many “forgotten but very good” players the league has put out.

RIP.

I remember being excited when the Saints got Dawkins back in the day… He did his best, but Saints QBs were largely trash during his time… and coaching as well.

RIP

I remember Poole having a few big plays. But coaching and QB play really hindered the WRs we had.
Aside from Willie Roaf, Joe Johnson, La’Roi Glover, Sammy Knight, & Jerry Fontenot, those Ditka era rosters were total garbage.
