Wow!!! That's harsh. Some folks here now look tame for wanting to throw in the towel on TP after just one preseason game compared to this. Absolutely Brutal! Maybe we should do a poll on who loses their job first, Smith or Penning?

Things were supposed to be different with new offensive coordinator Arthur Smith, right?

No more Matt Canada meant no more boring, listless football. This was going to be a dynamic, powerful rushing attack and deep passing.

One preseason game in the books and that definitely didn’t show up on the field. And as we all know, when it comes to Steelers fans, it doesn’t take much for them to turn on their team.

Steeler Nation took to X, formerly Twitter to call for Smith to be fired before the game even ended.

Why do folks keep saying that about Penning? This ain’t his first action, far from it. lol

And for the record I’m not in that crowd. (Throw in the towel) but I find this assertion hilarious.

As to Smith, fans are called that for a reason short for fanatic and some folks fit that bill.

I seem to remember a "fire Jon Stinchcomb" campaign every year, and luckily the coaches didn't pay attention. They may yet replace Penning, and I won't be surprised, but neither will I be surprised if they keep trying to develop him like they did Stench.

So wait, some fans are overly concerned about their team after the first preseason game. All they see is failure leading todoom and gloom.? Come on, that doesn’t happen.

That fan Nathan should apologize for going rogue with that tweet😉

Nathan was the first one amongst many others that repeated the same tweet even though another guy wanted to go on record as being the 1st.

But yeah, you're right. Most of us have probably looked less than stellar on our 1st day performing on the job, even if experienced at it, if not allowed to use all the tools in the tool belt.

Not sure if you caught what I was referencing?🤣

Arthur Smith was a terrible hire from the get go. The Steelers were in the same situation offensively as the Saints, so imagine if the Saints hired Arthur Smith to replace Carmichael.

Is it really surprising that uneducated sports fans tweet nonsense after a pre-season game? It's crazy to me that "journalists" are using 4 random tweets to build a headline and article.

There's a parallel between Smith and Penning. It wasn't the first action from either, but it was the 1st action in the preseason this year for both.

The Steeler fanatics were over the top by tweeting "Fire Smith" during the 1st preseason game when he was not showing his entire full-blown offense to their dismay. Likewise, the Saints were not running the offense they will run in the regular season as Carr pointed out in his sideline interview.

We have a dedicated Make or Break for Penning Tonight thread active on page one with 99 reply posts and counting to this point. To be fair most are still cautiously optimistic but the first D.O.A. post landed on page one, 4 1/2 hours before kickoff. Don't get me wrong, Penning didn't play "good enough" imho, but rays of hope.

I found that you ended one of your posts in that thread with hope for the young man.

I was a huge fan of the pick, and we needed a tackle, so I’m still holding out hope for him.

Now, if anyone were to have followed the Gameday thread you would have thought that Penning spent his time playing the game on the ground in the fetal position with his blankie and a binky in his mouth instead of a mouthpiece. :baba:

That's been a thing for years now. They go find a few random tweets from absolute nobodies with no engagement and write an article about how "everyone" or "the whole internet" is up in arms about whatever nonsense they're writing about.

Journalism is dead and and the algorithm driven nonsense that replaced it just continues to aggressively hump the corpse while screaming in the darkness.
