I didn’t read they’d burnt it. Thought just a money thing. He was a stud for them. And idk if they should have put Cole in, but I do know they should not have gone with whom they did. Hindsight and all tho. Even tho I was upset with them yanking the starter as it happens. He’s a soft thrower and was cruising. He was just ‘on’.
 
Statically speaking its incredibly rare to repeat the kind of season Cold had. Whoever pays him better hope he stays healthy because his value comes into play in the postseason. Strasburg who was ok in the regular season but dominate in the post season.
I think its crazy to pay there guys. The Astros have built their team through the draft and picking the bones of those teams who cannot bust through at the trade deadline.
Having that much capital tied up in one player diminishes the overall team. Strasburg cost the Nats Rondon. Ouch.

He didn't just have one good season. Over the last 5 years excluding 2016 which he had injury issues and only started 19 games, Cole has avaraged 5 WAR / year. Even including 2016 its still 4 WAR per year. On the open market WAR is worth about $8m / win. So paying $35m per year is not an overpay.
