Today the Bills announced that they were moving on from Von Miller. While he certainly isn’t the pass rusher he once was, he is going to get paid.

Add to this Joey Bosa’s release, and the availability of T-Rex, and you have to wonder about how this market is going to play out. The market will be more flush with talent than it ever has been, so someone is going to get a good deal on a good pass rusher (probably a title contender and not us).

This will also cause some weird turns in the draft.

At a position of such importance I’m intrigued to see how this all plays out.

We need to get younger, not older.

The market being saturated along with a strong draft class bodes well for us being able to keep Chase and still draft someone.

We need to build this team through the draft, like the Eagles and chiefs, and sprinkle in some FA. If the Saints switch to a 3-4 defense, we will need to retool both the interior defensive line, i.e. nosetackle, and edge rushers. This draft is heavy with both, and we should take advantage of that.

Let’s not forget, we say that often, and yet players change teams and make a big impact for 3 years. Why shouldn’t we do that? An older wiser player is better than what we have. And we can’t exactly sign and draft up and coming talent at all open spots.
I would take Bosa and Engram easily, at the right price.

Joey Bosa was too often injured an Von Miller is one of the oldest defenders in the league. Crosby and Garrett's contracts have raised the market price for healthier and younger edge rushers this year. Trey wants in on that and I am assuming Chase Young is going to want to be some teams fallback option at close to $20m a year now that his neck issue is resolved.

The amount of money being poured into contracts like Crosby, Garrett, and (soon to be) Watt and Parsons, is going to cause players to get released, or get lower than market rate. As a fan of a team on a shoe string budget, I am a fan of this.

Miller struggled a lot this past season. He would still occasionally make some good splash plays here and there but he was also a liability more often than not.

The NFL roster can't survive another position blossoming in pay the way QB's did. And with Garrett's new contract, thats what is looking like to happen. Don't be surprised to see NFL teams look to other strategies for defense in the coming years. Most teams will look to spend that money on a franchise QB over a pass rush 19 out of 20 times.

stout run defense with collapsing middle, blitzing MIKES or safeties, coverage sacks. There are loads of strategies defenses can deploy to make up for an average EDGE as long they can set the edge.

I still haven't heard what you think the right price is for Engram, that will actually enable signing him, but now you're tacking on Bosa too?

Saying 'the right price' without acknowledging the context is, frankly, a nonsense. @texasjefe I need some of your forum commentary gold to make this pain go away.

Sounds plausible to me.

There's a lot of depth in the draft, but teams will look to fill needs beforehand, so some money will get spent on these FA guys.

Here’s an idea….lets make a roster full of old, often injured players…..older and more injured.

Loomis and the dog of Pavlov, on bookshelves now.
