I agree. I think it matters even more in the NFL. With the salary cap and parity through the draft, the margin between "good" and "bad" teams' talent is not so big, unless a team is carrying a lot of dead cap. This magnifies the importance of coaching versus college, where sometimes the Sun Belt team playing an SEC team is just so lacking in size, speed and talent that it's not a game.

What's impressive about Payton is that the Broncos have more dead cap than anyone in the league (Russell Wilson) and are starting a rookie QB. Payton really is a difference maker at head coach.

Although with Payton’s age; i think Denver will be his last stop and won’t surpass five or six years.
