Underhill: Saints are interviewing probably 12 coaches [Tracker: 8 scheduled interviews] (174 Viewers)

Even if Loomis already has a handshake deal with his choice for head coach, he is still going to interview a dozen candidates. Any GM must make it look like it was a legitimate search for the best coach available. I’d be surprised if the new door plaque for the head coach office isn’t already engraved.

I might be wrong. But I think many are being too hard on Loomis. When Loomis hired Payton, it wasn't because he was the more experienced or most sought-after candidate. I thought there were better options. I believe he was a QB coach for Dallas, and he was demoted while with the Giants. But he was the one who "Wowed" Loomis the most even if he was maybe the most inexperienced.

I understand the DA hire because the thinking was that the fall-off in Payton's last year was injuries, etc. and that the train would stay on the tracks with DA. Now that that's clearly not the case, I don't think he changes from wanting to be "Wowed" rather than someone he knows. And if it is someone like AG, it will be because he gave the best interview, not because Loomis knows him.

I really don't think the beat writers for this team understand that over the last year and a half, Loomis lost so many fans confidence between ridiculous tone-deaf commentary leading into that totally ridiculous end-season presser into defending a career loser to the hilt, even after the owner stepped in and fired him and even blaming injuries as if DA didn't lose most of the team when he apologized to Arthur Smith(Per James Hurst on WDSU). Even the week after on WWL, he continued to make ridiculous comments that once again, were tone-deaf.

Only a very small group of people on this forum still have some confidence in him but most fans I've spoken to just have 0 faith in him.

You don't interview 12 guys just to make it look good. They only interviewed like 5 guys before hiring DA and people said the same bullshirt about it just being for show.

Would much rather him than Matt Nagy. With reports out there that we are interested in Nagy I think I may puke

Did you know Nagy has a better career winning percentage than Gruden? I don't want either of them as head coach, but people pretending Gruden is a much better coach than Nagy is pretty funny.

Oh he’s definitely a better head coach than Nagy and you pretending he’s not is pretty funny.

I mean Nagy has won a bunch of playoff games, oh wait.

I mean Nagy didn’t have to give up his play calling in Chicago bc of how inept the offense was, oh wait.

His best season there they scored more than 15 points in their playoff game, oh wait.

He didn’t have a repetition in Chicago for not taken responsibility when things went wrong, oh wait.

He didn’t have a rep in Chicago of being unable to adapt or evolve in any way, oh wait.

I don’t want either one of them, they both suck. Just Nagy is absolutely terrible while Gruden is outdated

I think the beat writers understand that the average fan isn’t that smart and half of them are below that.

Oh yea and since you bring up career winning percentage make sure you bring up career post season winning percentage as well….

Nagy 34-31 regular season and 0-2 in the post season. He was a disaster in Chicago, go read up on his terrible leadership.

Gruden 117-112 and 5-4 in the postseason including a SB champ

Let’s not for one second act like Nagy has ever been better than Gruden, that’s asinine. Again, I’d rather other coaches than either one of these. But to act like Gruden is or was a bum head coach and Nagy was more efficient or just better is one of the worst takes I’ve seen on here in a little while, and that’s saying something.

Let’s not forget Gruden’s breakdown of qb’s on MNF. That was always solid, Gruden is a QB whisperer. Just so happens QB is the most important position in football and obviously NFL football. Get that part right and you will always be in the playoffs.

Pretty sure Sean Payton was a qb whisper er too. Qb coach who knew talent
