Vehicle plows into tourists (ETA and locals) on Bourbon, at least (edit now 15) fatalities (69 Viewers)

If an improvised explosive device was found in the car, it must have been an act of terror. Thankfully, it didn’t detonate—things could have been far worse.

It's a tragic day. I hope they uncover what drove someone to commit such a terrible act.

Getting a local report from a witness, someone who is staying at the Royal Sonesta. Bit before 3:20, hearing loud banging sounds. They were in their room. Looked out the window, saw bodies on the ground and truck speeding away. 30 minutes later there was a bomb scare threat announced and the hotel was evacuated.

Sounds like mostly locals so i should amend my thread title.. frankly, the fact that it’s mostly locals hurt on NYE into New Years Day/Sugar Bowl is very surprising .
Likewise surprising to me, too.

Heard 2 cops were shot. Haven't heard if either are among the known fatalities or if they are among the 36 reported injuries at various hospitals. Next press update by Chief Kilpatrick they are saying will be at 11 a.m.
First reports are saying the two officers were injured by gunfire, not considered to be among the dead.

With two major sporting events taking place in the city, the NCAA & NFL can't be happy with how she described this incident. She definitely fumbled her time behind the mic this morning. Not a good look by a mayor.
I haven't heard her yet having just tuned in. I'm glad. I hate listening to her.

Interesting.. having worked on that block myself for a while, if ur friend could actually see bodies from her room at the Sonesta, that means that the ‘terrorist’ or whatever we are calling him must have made it down that full city block of Bourbon (between Canal & iberville) , killing folks that whole way, if ur friend could literally see bodies, since iirc the Sonesta ends at Ibervile …. Either way, what an absolutely crazy way for him/her to start the new year .

The truck was a pickup truck. For some reason I had pictured more of a, I guess, panel type commercial delivery truck.

Not my friend, this was a report of a man who was staying there who also, I believe, mentioned having been a medic in, IIRC, Iraq. I am just kind of riffing a running commentary what I'm getting here on local news for those who aren't local. He didn't mention the side they were on and I was trying to think, too, what street he was meaning.

Thanks for clarifying .

No doubt the authorities are already breaking down everything known about this perpetrator and his history, possibly even hoping to find some sort of social media posts or manifesto describing his issues & motive.
