Saints Was Archie Manning the only Saint to get Player of the Year? (1 Viewer)

Best of my knowledge Archie is the only Saint to get this or any other award close to MVP.

And I will say to the day I die that the fact the Drew Brees didn't get MVP in 2009 or 2011 (and maybe a few other seasons) only proves that the award is stupid and pointless (but probably cost Brees a few bills, because you have to expect that winning MVP is a contract bonus for just about any QB).

Well Brees signed the "highest paid" ever "this week" contract so I'm sure did didn't miss any dollars.

2009 Yes, 2011 No. Rodgers had a season for the ages in 2011

All Rodgers did was throw like three fewer INTs and score 1 or 2 more rushing TDs. Brees threw more TDs and broke a decades-old passing yards record (and had about 800 yards more than Rodgers). He also set a new single-season completion record (breaking his own record, from 2009), IIRC.

I'm not saying you can't make the case for A-Aron's award. But to say he was hands-down better than Brees that year (as the MVP vote tally indicated) is just unsupportable. The 2006 MVP vote was closer, and I think the case for LaDainian that season is better than the case for Rodgers in 2011.

I'm so trying to figure out how in the world did the NFL gave the MVP to Peyton Manning over Drew Brees in the 2009 season.

2009 season
Saints 13-3
Colts 14-2

Brees had more TDs & fewer INTs than Manning. Plus, Brees sat out the season finale due to already locking up #1 Seed. But Manning had more than 150+ yards & 1 more game than Brees

Exactly, which is why the rationale for awarding Rodgers the MVP in 2011 is so maddeningly stupid. In 2009, Brees=2011 Rodgers and Manning=2011 Brees. So which is it, MVP voters?

In my opinion, the NFL should get rid of the fans taking apart of the Pro Bowls & awards voting process. Some fans are blind by popularity over stats

One other fairly similar honor that comes to my mind and not posted here yet is Rueben Mayes winning the Offensive Rookie of the Year (OROY) for 1986 from the AP. Same award George Rogers won in 1981.

I think Archie's honor is a bit lost to history because it was the UPI's version of the award. UPI is still around, but long story short, it has a much, much smaller footprint in the media world than it did in the mid-20th century when it competed with AP.

As the UPI voted for Archie in 1978, the AP went with Terry Bradshaw as the NFL MVP. Staubach finished down the line in both polls....

1978 AP MVP voting, as per Pro Football Reference

the answer begins and ends with "Saints".

Both teams had 3 losses after everything was said and done!😁
