At least we would only have to pay him top 10 money not top 5 money. Other compensation, would be a number one if someone signs him.

I think that is how the transition tag works.

i agree, give us another year to work long term deal, plus if we cant work one out then we should get a good year out of him.

Sounds good to me...We can ill afford to lose Charles Grant regardless what some may think.

For the Transition Tag, the wage is the average of the top 10 players at the player's position. The tagged player is free to negotiate with any other team. Although the original team is not entitled to any form of compensation from the new team, the original teams does maintain the Right of First Refusal, which in essence means that a Transition Player is like a RFA with the lowest tender offer.

The transition tag is basically worthless these days because the new team can insert a poison pill into the contract assuring that the original team can't match.

There are now four tags:

The NFL has set the restricted free-agent tenders for this offseason. You'll notice that this year is the first time there is a second-round tender that teams can slap on their RFAs. Here are the different amounts of the tenders:

Low tender (right of first refusal and draft pick compensation from original round the player was chosen if offer is not matched): $850,000.

Second round (ROFR and second-round draft pick if offer is not matched): $1.3 million.

First round (ROFR and first-round draft pick if offer is not matched): $1.85 million.

First and third (ROFR and first- and third-round draft picks if offer is not matched): $2.35 million.

This is true, but Grant is a UFA so the above is not applicable.

Can't use RFA tags and as mentioned, Transition is pretty much worthless. All you can do is match and if you don't, you get no compensation. And now teams have figured out ways to make it where you cannot match. All we can really do is re-sign the guy or franchise him.

not any more.. the NFL has stepped in and said they will void any contract offers that include ridiculous poison pills... They will not let a Minnesota-Hutchinson issue occur again.

I think he should be franchise tagged before he walks for free.

Worst case scenerios are: he plays here another year while Ninkovich gets ready.
or he gets traded for a 1st round pick.

I remember hearing something about no more poison pills too.

That's good if true. But even if it is, you get no compensation. All you have is the right to match. I'm sure if he got an offer as a UFA he would give us a chance to match it. I don't really see the point other than he's guaranteed top 10 money. Either franchise him or let him test FA and see what his market value is.

If someone gave us a 1st round pick for Grant, that would be remarkable!
