I am of the opinion that in the last 5-6 years we have seen a drop off of real elite talent across the NFL. You got guys like a Cmac or Kamara and Justin Jefferson, but the amount of these guys seem so few compared to when we had the age of the QBs playing in this game.

Brees, Rodgers (still active but past his time), Brady, Ryan, Newton, Romo, Favre, Warner, Roth, such a high number of great QBs along with real top talent on those teams. But it seems todays NFL is lacking alot of what we seen in the 2000s into the late 2010s.

So that leaves us with the thinking, is coaching becoming more important now than back when these guys played? When you look at the coaches of all the QBs who played, only one that has really done anything has been Andy Reid, and that took a franchise QB in the draft and after all the QBs retired and coaches retired before he won SBs. The only other coach really doing well has been Kyle Shanahan which is a branch of his father.

Is this why we seeing more former players thrusted into head coaching positions? Is this really why Andy Reid has any championships at all, because most of the talented coaches and rosters have diminished so much over the past few years to where he the only one left?

Say what you want about KC, but they looked bad last year, do not look good this year, but it didnt stop them from winning a SB last year, reason is when you really look at any of the playoff teams in the AFC, NFC wasnt much better, Detroit was probably better than San Fran but it never ended that way.

Thoughts?

Harbaugh or Tomlin never won off teams they built. Thats the key difference. Both won off Brian Billick and Cower who both set in the booth now. If Brian Billick ever got back into coaching, it be a sight to see.
I hope you realize that Ray Lewis was the only player left from the first Ravens Super Bowl, when Hardbaugh won🤣🤣🤣
How was that not a team that Hardbaugh built?

Might be right, I was thinking Billick was there closer to the 2013 sb but he was gone 7 years earlier.

It has always been about coaching. Everyone who tells you otherwise is just severely coping with their terrible coaches.
I dunno, Sean or Bill seem to not done anything since Brees and Brady left. Brady took a mediocre coach in Tampa to the SB that otherwise would never been in the playoffs.

QBs seem about the same. There has always been about 10 teams with a bad QB situation for as long as I can remember. If anything the Olines are really poor, coaches don't know how to scheme the run, and it's hard to put together a good offense.

Tomlins a joke.Player discipline is minimal, cant win in tough situations.
I do agree that Tomlin is too much of a player’s coach, and it has hindered his ability to win more, but he has put together some really fun/competitive teams.

The jury is still out on SP, as he is still coaching. So, he could build a winner in Denver, or wherever his coaching journey takes him. I don’t give much credit to Bill Bellicheat. Dont care what anyone says, that dude constructed one of the most sophisticated ways of cheating, and I will pound the desk, saying that he is the ultimate fraud. By him (and that organization) cheating, they ruined the legacies of other players. Cant respect that.

I’m of the opinion that you can be an amazing head coach with a solid coaching staff, but if you don’t have the players, you aren’t winning. On the flip side, you can have really good players, but if your coaching sucks, you aren’t winning.

In summary, I believe you need both to find success.

I dont agree that the Chiefs sucked last year. They play great situational football last year. Whi in the AFC was legitimately better. No one in AFC West, not the South, East or North. Baltimore was closest team and many times tgey did not loook great either

Talent absolutely still plays a role, but what a lot of people don't realize is the gap in talent in the NFL is not as big as you may think outside of Quarterback.

The biggest downfall for Payton and Belichick is once their franchise QB's left, they had to find new ones, no easy task. That is where the biggest gap in talent exists in the NFL. And Tampa was far from mediocre talentwise in 2019. They had the #3 scoring offense in the league in 2019, before Brady. Winston killed their defense with 30 interceptions. That's where talent matters. Tampa finished 2020 with the #3 ranked scoring offense. But guess what improved without 30 interceptions? Their defense. The 2021 Saints despite setting a record for injuries finished with a winning record.

Let's look at the 2024 Saints offense. They brought in Lucas Patrick, a Guard with an average at best career. They drafted Taliese Fuaga, an extremely talented OT prospect. The other 9 starters on offense were on the Saints last season. Penning was benched by the previous offensive staff.

And yet here the Saints are, currently with the #1 scoring offense in the league.

The other important thing a coach brings is vision. What kind of talent does that coach want? A coaches ability to say "this is who I need for my team to succeed" is critical. The GM and scouts then know the "prototypes" to look for that best fit the intended scheme, be it offense or defense.
