I can't help but to feel that both our offense & our defense needs some serious revamping to put us back into contender mode. Yes we all know that Kellen's forte' is to make his offense more productive and to sustain drives for game winning scoring. But we all know from the Brees years that even an efficient offense needs a dominant defense that can stop the opponent from zipping past you on the scoreboard.

We're being told that we now have two great football minds on both sides of the football who will be rebuilding both teams... and that sounds really good. But which team will be hardest for the Saints to restore? To me the offense looks to be more of a 'tweak' situation. But the defense will be undergoing a complete change in scheme & philosophy... which also means finding the unique talent needed to pull it off.

As badly as I want to see an exciting new offense, it seems to me that the defensive adjustments could take many years to convert effectively. So which of our teams should we expect will make the biggest strides the quickest?

I hope free agency is used to mostly patch some of our rough spot on defense such as resigning Chase Young, trading for a run stuffing DT in Davon Godchaux, and a high quality Safety in Justin Reid, and hopefully a starting CB in Asante Samuel. Then add a guy like Mekhi Becton on offense to shore up the interior OL. Feel like if we pull this off we could really focus on adding some real playmakers on offense via the draft.

Every top 10 offense under KM was already top 10 before he arrived.

This offense is totally new territory for him.

Hands down defense. We don't have a single pro bowl talent on any level of the defense.

Offense 1st because I expect Carr to remain healthy enough to win. I think the defense will take some time to come around, much like it did when Allen took over. It was roughly 2 years before we started to see the identity of our defense take shape.

Really like to atleast see the offseason finish first. So far the defense has the most work done to it. Run defense should be better.

It's also relative. The defense had a down year last year but have been generally pretty good in the past. The offense has the most room for improvement. But we've seen nothing done to it yet.

We also have two new coaches and schemes on both sides we've seen nothing of. Too many unknowns for me.

I guess I'd hope it's the offense first because of Moore. Then again we might be looking at a new QB soon and that's a whole nother thing that could set them back.

Since the consensus is that our offense should take a big step forward quicker than the defense, can our offense be hot enough to simply outscore opponents on a regular basis, or should we expect a lot of 42-35 losses in the near future?

Asante Samuel? What year is this.

His son of the same name is a solid CB that played for the Chargers. Our new DC, Brandon Staley was the Chargers head coach when Samuel was drafted in the 2nd round in 2021. So there's a real connection there, hopefully the Saints can make it happen to replace Adebo.

I'm hoping Staley takes our input on CB prototypes. We've had success w/ drafting guys that meet certain length, height, weight measurements and Samuel fits none of them. However, I can see the connection being made, wouldn't be surprised if it happened and I'd probably be as lukewarm about it as the Chase Young signing but would be completely accepting of it.

Better offense.

We don't have the dudes on D as it is now.

I'm probably a bit bias on this as I was very high on Samuel back in 2021 and was hoping we would draft him on day 2 that year, but he was picked before we had a chance to.

Defenses typically have the edge in the early season. I thought the draft would tell us a lot about Moore's strategy but free agency has given us some hints as well. Looks to me like they are putting an emphasis on re-tooling the defense. Not necessarily to make it the dominant side of the ball, but if Moore and co can make some magic happen with the offense, they don't want to be caught with their pants down with a defense that completely derails the season. So I think the defense could look more improved than the offense out the gate. We might be looking to add offensive weapons via the draft and if thats the case, then I would say offense looks like the stronger unit by seasons end.

The defense was so bad last season, that they will probably improve more quickly than the offense. They have a longer way to go, and the additions of Godchaux and Reid shows me that the coaching staff realizes it. Until I see a physical WR, a starting caliber LG, and an effective TE on offense, I’m not very confident that the offense will improve that much.
