There was a time when the New Orleans Saints were so bad that their fans called them the “Ain’ts” and wore paper bags over their heads at home games.
The embarrassment was justified.
The Saints finished with losing records in each of their first 12 seasons before going 8-8 in 1979, but they returned to their losing ways a year later when they went 1-15. New Orleans was 0-14 before beating the New York Jets 21-20 on the road.
The following week, San Antonio native Guido Merkens was picked up by the Saints after he was cut by the Houston Oilers.
Merkens, a 1973 Edison High School graduate, got a taste of the Saints’ sense of futility when he started at safety in their 38-27 loss to the New England Patriots in the 1980 finale.
Now general manager of the CarMax auto dealership in San Antonio, Merkens has harkened back to his days as a Saint since New Orleans earned a berth in Sunday’s Super Bowl against the Indianapolis Colts.

Didn't see this posted anywhere. He was definitly a fan favorite when he played for the Saints. One of mine, anyway.
On the downside, he thought the Colts would win the SB.
