There was talk before the draft that the 49ers were considering trading Deebo Sameul or Brandon Aiyuk. Longtime bay area reporter Mike Silver stated the team is "actively looking" to deal Samuel. That did not happen in the draft but there is lingering talk that it could still happen seeing that the 49ers drafted Ricky Pearsall.

"Deebo Samuel is a limited WR, Kyle is tired of him," revealed former NFL executive John Middlekauff on the Colin Cowherd podcast.

The chatter leads to speculation that the 49ers are still considering trading Deebo Samuel prior to the start of the 2024 season.

What would a trade for him look like and what would it cost for a team to acquire him, and to whom would he be worth it to?

Should the Saints be interested?

I listened to some discussion of this on NFL Radio. They were saying the Niners are asking too much for him with his injury history so they'll have to come down from the price. IIRC, they are asking for a 2nd and teams aren't willing to pay that, something along those lines.

Why aren't the niners interested?

Presumably a combination of contract cost, injury history and re-injury probability, plus their perception of his skillset as a replaceable one.

They may have found his replacement in WR Ricky Pearsall according to the article above.

Most folks here drool over the idea of Samuel here in the Kubiak offense, or a player in his mold.

Maybe he isn't what he's perceived to be by the masses.

Yes, hopefully we are not interested. We are still a ways away from being any type of contender. Would be a dumb move to invest in an injury prone receiver that we’d have to give up assets for and overpay.

They drool over the skillset/usage, however, he isn't durable and that limits him. The ideal player is one with that skillset, but more durable.

Also, that offense has evolved. We've seen it with Miami and they are making changes for the 2024 season as the all speed/finesse version isn't good for late season/playoff football. KK looks be putting in a modified version of it and it could be since he's been exposed to other offenses/personnel.

Jennings in the X role evolved and his role grew as the season went on. Bub Means can be our X like Jennings, but with top end speed which Jennings doesn't have.

That's kind of the point I was making.

Amen.

Aiyuk is also coming up for a new contract, so I guess they only want to choose one.
Which is something I think people forget when advocating for more resources to be invested in drafting high at WR, signing a premier FA or trading for one.

The fact that Olave will be due a 2nd contract in a couple of years means you don't want to have a second ticking time bomb of contract expiry coming up around the same time with a second premier WR. It remains to be seen how long Philadelphia can pay both Devonta and AJB top dollar.

I'm not advocating the Saints trade for Samuel. Just asking what you guys think whether it's elsewhere or should the Saints be interested. Glad to see the majority of posts say no and for the right reasons imo; injury prone, prohibited cost to acquire, and future cost to retain.

Exactly. Let's not act like Deebo Samuel isn't an awesome weapon. It's just that to get the most out of him he has to be used receiving and rushing but his body can't handle it. In his monster '21 season Samuel had 59 carries and 77 receptions for 136 total touches. He hasn't topped 100 touches before or since. So if he's not getting carries as a do it all weapon then he's just a WR. Or more like a RB playing WR. Super talented when it comes to running after the catch but limited in terms of being a polished route runner.

It's the same thing the Saints faced with Taysom Hill. He can play QB but he's not a QB. He's not a RB. He's not a TE or a WR. He's just a guy who makes plays with the ball in his hands. The Saints and 49ers could replace their production on paper by giving targets and carries to other guys but they would lose that Joker element that puts doubt in the defense's mind.

Deebo and Taysom have to be frustrating players. They are awesome with the ball in their hands but they don't have a natural fit and they are expensive. You can't live with em, can't live without em.

My gut tells me that he takes the same abuse that running backs do due to the style of offense they run (and we're about to).
He will cost a lot and has high mileage.
My vote would be no.
