With the trade deadline approaching in just 2 days will the Saints be Buyers or Sellers? Or should the Saints stand pat?
Loomis and D.A. have said that the Saints won't be Sellers. They didn't address whether or not they intend to be Buyers or not.
The Trade Deadline is the Tuesday, November 5th, 2024 at 3 pm CST.
If the Saints win today, it may be less likely that they will be sellers and could increase possibility that they will be buyers. A loss today would most likely flip the script the other way around.
Which Saints players would be the most likely candidates to be traded away if the Saints become Sellers?
1. Marshon Lattimore - He currently has a hamstring injury and will not play today. The Saints did not place him on IR. Any team trading for him may have to waive the hamstring injury as part of him passing a physical for an agreement to make a trade. Supposedly there is interest by other teams to acquire Lattimore. The last and only time he played a full season was in 2018, 7 years ago. He missed half of the games the past 2 years and after today he will have missed 2 out of 9 games this year as well of parts of others. That's actually an improvement over the prior 2 years. When healthy he's a top 10 player at his position, even now at 28 1/2 years old. The Saints restructured his contract earlier in the season, converting a large portion of his 2024 salary into a bonus ($13.8M) which he has already received from the Saints. That lowered his base salary for 2024 to $1.2M, making him a much friendlier trade target. Value?
2. Cameron Jordan - Cam Jordan hit the wall last year and father time has been riding his back. I doubt he's in high demand or could garner much at this stage in his career. However, contenders in need of a rotational DE that can still play the run and can get occasional pressure while bringing a savvy veteran presence to a locker room can't be understated. I just don't see the Saints moving Jordan as he is the ultimate team leader and iron man for the franchise. ??
3. Willie Gay, Jr. - Gay could step in and start for a lot of teams. A contender needing a rotational veteran LBer with speed could do worse. Does he have any trade value and what would he bring if so?
4. Chase Young - Young has been a bit of a disappointment as he has the tools but true to form over his career he has underperformed. Still, a team in need of a pass rusher could come calling. He's only under contract for 2024. Value??
5. Jamaal Williams - Williams is currently injured but it shouldn't be serious if there was any interest. He could be a solid depth back for a contender that relies on the run game. Maybe a pick swap like a 6th for a 7th. Value??
I don't know of any other Saints players that will draw interest or that would make sense to trade considering salary cap ramifications.
Is there anyone else on the team that would be of interest to another team?
Which players across the league would be targets for the Saints to acquire should they become Buyer?
I'm not sure of a sure-fire target for the Saints. The Saints have so many issues across all position groups one single player probably won't make a difference for 2024 but if the team is looking ahead to 2025 it may make sense.
The Saints could use help at WR, OL, and a solid run stuffing interior DLineman.
Anyone you think the Saints should target to acquire in a trade before the 2024 deadline?
Should the Saints just stand pat and regroup in 2025?
