Baseball's Over!! Finally!!! (1 Viewer)

I love baseball, but BlueSky brings up a great point about revenue sharing and a level playing field.

Which is exactly why I root against Yankees and Red Sox.... A loss for the Yanks is a win for baseball.

Love it as I do, Baseball needs to end the regular season the last week of July and play the World Series the FIRST week of August, with game 7 (if necessary) ending the night before the 1st preseason NFL game. Once football season comes on, even preseason, its like you're holding hands with Janine Garafalo, and Jessica Alba walks by.

Janine works in the spring.

And basketball and hockey should wait till January 1st.

Actually the Yankees are great for baseball. Think back to 1994 and the strike. Baseball was in bad shape. The Yankees were a big part of bringing it back. Even hatred of the Yankees is good for baseball. The Yankees are by far the biggest draw and they support a number of teams through the luxury tax they pay. In fact teams like the Pirates and Marlins have now basically admitted that they take the 20 million or so they get from the Yankees and pocket it. They don't spend it on players. Why should they?

Baseball has some problems. They need to contract a few teams (probably the two mentioned above). And also a salary floor to go with the luxury tax cap. But if it wasn't for the Yankees of the past 14 years, baseball would be in even worse shape.

The Yankees are absolutely good for baseball, and are often the target of misdirected anger with regards to payroll disparity:

Going by the NFL formula, very generous considering the MLBPA is far more powerful an entity than any other union in sports, the payroll floor for 2009 would almost certainly be in the $100 million range. 58% of league revenue, as the players in NFL get, would be, in baseball, an average team payroll of a hair under $120 million. It's pretty clear that while the Yankees are outspending everyone comfortably, the rest of baseball has just as much to do with the payroll disparity as the Yankees do.

What resurrected baseball after the strike was Cal Ripken's consecutive game streak. He was the last of a breed, playing 21 seasons for the same team with minimal whining. he was the only reason I gave a damn about baseball. since he retired....

foul ball, ball, ball, foul ball, look-off runner on first, foul ball, batter asks for time, foul ball, foul ball, throw to first, foul ball, step off the mound, grounder to first.

BATTER UP!

ZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz..............

The worst thing on television ever is Baseball Tonight showing spring training highlights. No one can like baseball that much, right?

As much as I don't like baseball.

I gotta say that game 6 was one of the greatest game I've watched. Kept me on the edge of my seat all night long, that was incredible. That was really, really exciting.

agreed.....as a kid I loved baseball. Watched it all the time, played it when I wasn't watching it, and had a huge card collection. Those days have been long gone (except the cards....still have those) and today I find it very boring to watch on TV. That being said I was digging that game tonight....it had everything. I was a huge St Louis fan back in the day because I was born and raised in Missouri. Glad to see them stick around....just gotta pull off tomorrow's game and win it all.

To give you an idea when I watched baseball last. Guys like Joaquin Andujar, Bruce Sutter, Andy Van Slyke, Willie McGee, George Hendrick, and Tom Herr were playing for the Cards. :ezbill:

As much as the NBA sucks, it will leave a big void this year when baseball is over. Hearing about football 7 days a week is a little much when it only happens twice a week.

Although it will be funny/painful watching guys like Wilbon/Kornheiser/Screamin A Smith have to talk about hockey.
