What Roman Harper not restructuring tells us (1 Viewer)

Base salary isn't only what Harper is making so that's a partial picture.

There's a reason we can't cut him with any benefit. Because he's making a ton of prorated money this year.

Harper's deal is still top 5 for a Safety in the past 2 years. We overpaid on the guaranteed money and we have no flexibility with him because of it.

While I understand what you are saying and I agree... it does seem almost like you're referring to money he has already earned via signing bonus, etc as money he is guaranteed to earn this coming year.

The majority of the time, the prorated money is usually the result of a big signing bonus which the player has already received. I believe Roman's signing bonus was in the neighborhood of $7-8 million, iirc. Spread that out amongst the 4 years and you get $1.75mil added to the cap hit annually until his contract is up, but it is not money owed to him in these years. All that he will be "making" this year is his base salary and probably some workout incentives.

Talking?

Wife - I love these curtains, what do you think honey? Don't They look fantastic?
Husband - Yes dear.
Wife - I knew you would say that, so I ordered new curtains for every window in the house. They arrived yesterday. You will hang them up today.
Husband - Yes dear.

HaHa. I feel your pain.

I discovered that "No I can't do your request today my love cause I'll be on SR for the next 3 hours," just doesn't seem to go over very well. What's up with that? Bring on more Harper, Devery, Reggie and JG threads.!

He holds all the cards on this. I suspect we are gonna wait and see if he plays better in Ryan's defense (what choice do we have). I'm hoping he actually lives up to what he's being paid to do this year.

What's the cap hit if we cut him after June 1st ? How much would we save ?

Pfft. That is not pain. That is bartering material. It becomes natural after being married for so many years.,

Husband - Going out with the guys after work for a couple beers.
Wife - Yes Dear.
Husband - I should be home around 7:00ish. Think you can have those beans and rice ready for when I get home?
Wife - Yes Dear.

Well, at least they are in the microwave when I do come in on those nights that get out of hand.:9:

Or, they want him on the team and they are going to wait until next year to restructure his contract. Or, they want him on the team and they will restructure his contract later this year if they need the cap space.

...or we don't know and Loomis is not telling. :hihi:

Have you ever considered this average Saints fan? Maybe just maybe. Unlike you, and the other average/typical saints fan think. Loomis, and Payton may actually believe he is worth that much?

Because that's ridiculously simplistic and unlikely.

If Roman Harper weren't signed and were a FA today Loomis wouldn't dream of handing him 7 million a year now nor would any other team. Hindsight is 20/20.

Good thing I'm not average.

No it doesn't.

It tells us we'll be able to make a decision on him next year based solely on his production/ability, not contract.

But if he has a good year this year there is no reason we can't or won't extend him next. If we were convinced he would be worthless, we'd just cut him now and eat the full salary this year. Obviously we feel theres at least a chance of him being a productive, useful player.

I do agree that next year he will either be cut or extended. It's unlikely he plays out on just the last year of his deal.

This pretty much covers my exact thoughts, only more eloquently written.

The fact that Roman has not been approached or has not restructured tells us that this will be his last year with us. We can't cut him due to the cap penalty and any restructure would push some of his hit to next year. It seems Loomis is just going to eat it on him this year and cut our losses next year.

They could designate him as a June 1st cut if we are desperate for cap room now. Of course, this would kick the can down the road but we would shed a substandard safety too.

So we cut him...now what?

Can you guarantee the replacement will perform at the same level or better?

Can you tell me that the FA replacement will come in and become a team captain?

Will the FA even see the field?

I can say that Harper will see the field and he is a team captain.

He may see the field and be a team captain but all that was true last year and he was brutally bad by almost any measure. If we can't find anyone better then we are stuck with a lousy SS, one of the worst in the NFL. If we can replace him, which shouldn't be hard, he should be shown the door immediately.

The ENTIRE defense was brutally bad.

So instead of seeing what we can salvage we will toss the baby out with the bathwater?
