NFL is apparently going to double down on the Clay Matthews penalty as "textbook example" of a foul (1 Viewer)

Ironic since Rodgers was the reason the rule was put in place to begin with... but GB got shafted on this doubling down on this as "illegal" is insanity. It was a picture perfect tackle.

I seriously think they want defenders to roll over while tackling to allow the quarterback to land on them instead of the ground.

If it's going to continue this way, then something else has to give. This should be a reviewable call and it should be open to more subjectivity. Why is one person making the call on these? Why not have a review panel that watches the play and votes on every reviewed play? Majority wins.

Nfl panel evidently reviewed it and decided to go with the roughing penalty being legit. So not sure ab in-game panel would do much.

Gotta hand it to the league. They found a way to turn the fans and media's attention towards a controversy of their choosing.

Everytime a big time QB gets injured... It literally cost the NFL $20 million on avg in lost salary alone.

NFL hates losing money. It's all about money.

Ok, I'm kinda joking but to balance this out for the defence QB should be considered down if touched by both hands. It can be called the touched down rule.

Just watched it.
Bullshirt call. Lol.
Joe Montana would have enjoyed this type of protection when LT destroyed him on a sack play back in the Day. In a playoff game. Not the game I grew up watching at all.

I could make an argument that that would be more dangerous. Not in terms of head trauma sure but in terms of the ACL risk. You’d have a grown man trying to wrestle a another grown man who has his leg planted down to the ground. Also if you overshoot and slam them into the ground you’re probably going to get flagged anyway. The NFL is losing its mind in the wake of the CTE scandal, which for me didn’t have to be a scandal at all. As others have said just acknowledge the risk in the contract and provide additional medical care to injuries directly related to football. It’s not that hard. Some people sign waivers to pay money to visit a “haunted house” that essentially tortures them or to try an overly spicy food challenge at a restaurant. I’m fairly certain a significant portion of players would sign a waiver to play football and earn millions of dollars doing so.

I've been watching the NFL since a kid in 1965. The real game is officially dead due to arse hats like Goodell and his team of lawyers. So very sad!

I personally like watching qb’s get smacked. With the exception of Drew Brees, they’re all douchebags.

Defensive ends have contract bonuses tied to sacks.

A roughing the passer penalty takes away a sack.

So lose $20,000 with a fine, and miss out on your bonus money.

David O the Saints DTackle was fined more than his game check week 1 he lost 2k for playing that game

A film of legit sacks should be taught not what can’t be done - the can’t be list will change each week - the can do should be more consistent and referred back to as a reference of approved play

Also should be reviewable as three plays/fouls change the game almost more than any other play as a completely uncatchable 3 yd pass on 3 and 10 can end in first down - and these calls are all judgment calls

A company policy that causes people to dislike your company is 'business suicide'. This is what we are seeing.
It's obvious that fear of lawsuits is destroying professional football. Plain & simple.

The NFL has implemented a lot of new safety features and medical procedures to try and reduce work related injuries. The same is true of workers in all other industries... many of which have quite dangerous aspects as part of the job requirements. It's time for the league to outline the job requirements and the methods that are now being employed to reduce the number and level of injuries and list it all in a written waiver that a player must sign before playing in the league. Included in the waiver should be how the NFL will assist any and all players who are faced with injuries, both long and short term. Then players will have to decide if the NFL is right for them just the same as if someone wanted a job as a diver, a miner, or any other dangerous job.

Please don't allow lawyers to destroy yet another industry that I once enjoyed.

This is what is driving me away from the NFL, ludicrous rules and officiating. Just not worth the headache when games are called like this.
