UPDATE, Jan. 29: The Athletic, citing a league source, reported (subscription required) that the NFL will not investigate the Saints' interactions with the archdiocese unless the emails, if made public, show troublesome actions by the team. "The NFL finds the behavior of the deacon repugnant but based on available evidence the Saints did nothing wrong, this source said," The Athletic's Daniel Kaplan wrote.

A hearing is scheduled for Friday.

I think part of the difference here too is the size difference and how centralized the Vatican is. Sexual assault, and subsequent covering up, is definitely happening in schools (public, private, etc) at a rate that's not unlike the catholic church. And yes everyone involved in such cover ups should be fired and sued.
What about jailed instead of being paid off like usual , because they have money are they above the law?

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The New Orleans Saints maintain their behind-the-scenes public relations work on the area’s Roman Catholic sexual abuse crisis was “minimal,” but attorneys suing the church allege hundreds of confidential Saints emails show the team actively helping to shape a list of credibly accused clergy that appears to be an undercount.
New court papers filed this week by lawyers for about two dozen men making sexual abuse claims against the Archdiocese of New Orleans gave the most detailed description yet of the emails that have rocked the NFL team and remain shielded from the public.

“This goes beyond public relations,” the attorneys wrote, accusing the Saints of issuing misleading statements saying their work for the archdiocese involved only “messaging” and handling media inquiries as part of the 2018 release of the clergy names.

Instead, they wrote, “The Saints appear to have had a hand in determining which names should or should not have been included on the pedophile list.”...........

Terrible, terrible look.

Just on optics alone, this has the potential to turn into a disaster... as a season ticket holder and a fan since Archie Manning was under center, i hope it doesnt.

You should wait until final verdict is out ..

Who says i’m not waiting, or that i’m jumping to conclusions? I clearly used the word ‘potential.’

potential
[ puh-ten-shuh l ]SHOW IPA

adjective
possible, as opposed to actual: the potential uses of nuclear energy.

capable of being or becoming: a potential danger.

I’m telling everyone right now this is going to get ugly . Worse then bounty gate type ugly .

I’m not saying I agree that it should get ugly but it will.

Like how?
Sell the team?
Nothing has been linked to any coaches/players.

Quoting this post for posterity, because i believe you might be right.

I too hope this goes away, but anything sensational and vaguely controversial has a tendency to catch fire, and it wouldn’t surprise me if the ‘haters’ of the Saints, or the NFL, or whoever jump on this and blow it up.

Hope i’m wrong.

If something was seriously covered up, or the Saints were involved to that extent, it would be taking over every channel last week when the AP first reported it.

Speaking from a fan perspective...

Just our affiliation alone will make our fans the butt of jokes and always have this stigma on us, fairly or not, about how we are a dirty organization with this and Bounty Gate.

There should be some firings off this from the pure stupidity of getting involved in ANY way.

I agree with you that heads should roll if the involvement was shown to be anything more than PR advice.. Hell, even if it IS just PR advice, i still think there should be firings because the team shouldn’t be anywhere near Catholicism... But i sort of disagree with you about ‘fans becoming the butt of jokes’.. I mean, yeah maybe, but we’ve been the butt of jokes before- the more pressing issue for me is can I personally continue to support a team , emotionally and financially, if they are found to have been involved or tried to help cover up things related in any way to Child Rape.

For now, i’ll plan to renew my season tickets when the payment’s due in a month or two from now- but then we’ll see where all this leads.. .. Hopefuly it’ll be a dead end.
